AXSUN Technologies takes the ax to bulky optoelectronic subsystems. Its Axsun Packaging Platform is a suite of components and manufacturing techniques that reduce the size of photonic assemblies used in optical networking systems. The platform combines specialized lenses, microelectromechanical system devices, and other components into packages much smaller than the usual printed circuit boards; these units can be tailored for many combinations of active and passive optical chips. The company was founded in 1999 by optical industry veterans. In early 2009 Volcano Corp. acquired AXSUN for $21.5 million in cash.
