It may not turn straw into gold, but Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies (AERT) does turn recycled waste into building materials. The company specializes in processing and converting scrap plastic and wood fiber waste into outdoor decking and fencing systems and window and door components. Its products are mainly used in residential renovation and remodeling by homeowners, homebuilders, and contractors as a greener alternative to traditional wood and plastic products. AERT markets its products under such names as ChoiceDek and MoistureShield; ChoiceDek is sold to home improvement retailers such as Lowe's through an agreement with distributor BlueLinx. H.I.G. Capital acquired 80% of AERT in 2011.
