Enzon Pharmaceuticals has PEGged its future on researching ways to fight cancer. The company is focused on developing compounds using its PEGylation technology and other platforms to improve the performance and deliverability of existing cancer drugs. PEGylation involves custom attaching polyethylene glycol (PEG) to a drug compound in order to make it more effective and less toxic for patients. Lead candidate PEG-SN38 uses PEGylation to increase exposure of cancer cells to SN38, the active metabolite of a chemotherapy drug marketed as Camptosar in the US.
