Florida Rock Industries is a big star in the arena of southern rock. The company provides sand, gravel, crushed stone, and ready mix concrete to the construction industry, and calcium products used in roofing and animal feeds. It also manufactures concrete block, ready mix concrete, and portland and masonry cements. Florida Rock operates quarries, plants, and distribution sites in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic US and serves commercial, industrial, residential, and governmental construction companies. It has joint ownership in a granite quarry and aggregates distribution venture in Canada. The Baker family owned about 25% of Florida Rock until rival Vulcan Materials acquired the company in late 2007.
