Don't worry, the money is real. Meta Financial Group is the holding company for MetaBank, a thrift with about a dozen branches in Iowa and South Dakota. MetaBank offers standard deposit products and services including checking and savings accounts. Its lending and investment activities are weighted towards real estate and real estate-related assets; commercial and multifamily residential mortgages comprise more than half of the bank's loan portfolio. It also writes single-family residential mortgages and business loans. Meta Financial's bread and butter, however, is the bank's Meta Payment Systems (MPS) division, which provides prepaid cards, consumer credit, and ATM sponsorship services nationwide.
