Taiwanese shoppers can thank heaven for 7-Eleven thanks to President Chain Store Corp. Established as a unit of Uni-President in 1987, the group operates some 4,750 7-Eleven stores in Taiwan, as well as about 500 locations in the Philippines. It opened its first 7-Eleven in Shanghai in 2009 and aims to grow to 150 stores in 2011. Through its President Coffee division, it operates more than 220 licensed Starbucks coffee bars. President also operates drugstores, supermarkets, and specialty food stores (Mister Donut) via more than a dozen different subsidiaries and affiliated companies. A tie up with Cold Stone Creamery of the US will open about 165 ice cream shops in China and Taiwan over the next several years.
