Complex mathematical theories and statistical methods are reborn as investment strategies at Renaissance Technologies. The quantitative hedge fund firm, which has more than $15 billion in assets under management in three funds, utilizes computer technical models to exploit mispricings in financial markets. Renaissance Technologies was founded by Jim Simons, a former math professor at MIT and Harvard who, in spite of his relative anonymity and avoidance of the spotlight, ranks as one of the richest men in the US. After three decades at the helm of Renaissance, Simons retired in 2010 and took on a new role as non-executive chairman.
