Description The Selective Service System remains in place should those drafty days return. The small federal agency is charged with providing personnel to the Department of Defense in the event of a national emergency. Though the US ended the draft in 1973, the Selective Service System remains in place as a contingency. It registers almost all male US citizens, ages 18 through 25, and manages this data so a draft can be resumed if necessary. Women are not required to register. The agency is also responsible for implementing an Alternative Service Program for men classified as conscientious objectors during a draft. The agency has a headquarters, data management center, three regional offices, and a $27 million budget.
