All About Optics

Pros

It's a genuinely beautiful property. The pay is competitive and there are a lot of ways to move up in management if you want to. Some of the people there are great.

Cons

Extremely toxic workplace culture. When you first join, they tell you how they value their 'team members' just as much as their guests. But what they mean is they provide shiny facilities and pay that seems good on the surface until you realise how much work you have to do. There is absolutely no consideration of work life balance. The upper management are, overall, supremely unqualified, disorganised and more concerned with going out for networking drinks than actually doing their job. There is such a severe focus on optics and appearances that you are told to suppress all negative emotions while at work and always be 'on'. A kind of professionalism that isn't warranted to expect when upper management make no attempt to follow it. Many hiring decisions, including management, are made based on friendships or whether or not upper management think they're attractive. Leading to a culture of incompetency that values beauty and nepotism above all else. The way young female employees are talked about is an hr timebomb, honestly. Main takeaway, the sustainability and care for employees is a veneer. This business cares about optics and profit and nothing more.

Pros

Pay was ok considering the poor management

Cons

I was hired to 1 Hotels after a 2-month long application process which involved 6 (!) interviews. At each interview I had to wait 30 mins - 1 hour for the interviewer to show up. I couldn’t tell if they were testing me, or if they were just totally disorganized and incompetent. It turned out to be the latter. They present a facade of being competitive and elite, but they are shallow and fake and don’t appreciate the talent of their employee base. They eventually hired me for their cafe position after the final interview, which was really like 3 interviews in one 3 hour period between the department head, then the HR rep, then the director. Then they asked for references, then a few days later called me to tell me I was hired. I was excited to join as the company offered good benefits, paid vacation, a great salary. 2 hours into my first day, upper management called a mandatory meeting for all staff, where we were informed that the food & beverage department had been bought out by a 3rd party and we would have to re-apply for our jobs in August. This was in mid-June. So basically, they advertised a temporary job as a long-term job with long-term benefits, lying to all of their employees and then laying them all off. Shady and dishonest, do not work for this company. Big waste of my time. They claim to be eco-friendly and yet there was no recycling in the entire F & B department. The eco-friendly branding is totally fake, don’t buy it. This was by far the most poorly run restaurant I have ever worked at, deceiving customers into buying low-quality breakfast, lunch and “dinner” at a high cost. They advised us to tell customers that our juice was fresh-squeezed, when it was actually from a bottle— that’s a pretty accurate analogy of the entire establishment.

Pros

The moment you're hired before you start and you dream of working somewhere so nice is the best part. It quickly fades as soon as you leave orientation. Do not walk, RUN AWAY.

Cons

The absolute worst job I've ever encountered in my entire life. Inept management, disgruntled co-workers, and everything is falling apart behind the scenes. The worst part is how "wonderful" the company portrays itself to the world, and even to the employees - but they can't afford to buy anything to make your life better such as an ice scoop, or a fan in blazing heat while you sweat into customers drinks and food. Food poisoning is rampant in the cafeteria and people look like they are in prison on their breaks. It's all an act. They pretend to be holy, yet they are the opposite of that through and through.
