Pros

- Many of the ICs are fantastic people: talented and driven. They've built good bonds with each other and use those relationships to work together to do great work. - Interesting problem space. The company has ideas in a space that could really take hold - but only if the company is managed well and can execute.

Cons

- Low trust: turnover is high and much of that can be attributed to people given little-to-no time and space to have any real positive impact. - All failure is attributed to others, not to top leadership: there's always an excuse as to why things aren't going well, but its never a reflection of poor decisions. - Hustle culture to the extreme: unreasonable targets and seemingly little respect for employees ability to weigh in on the feasibility of what is being asked of them. - People are treated as disposable: you might be let go with little to no warning and leadership is not willing to make any investment into coaching and guiding people. It's not uncommon to hear things like "we're not a charity" and "we're not paying people to learn". - Internal actions and behaviours don’t align with publicly published values: the only value seems to be hustle. If you are led to believe that you're joining a people-focused organization, you might want to speak with some current or past employees and double check that.

Thanks for this review, we alway look forward to hearing from past 1builders and welcome all feedback--positive or negative. I am glad that you had a good experience with other ICs on your team and I apologize if you felt that other areas of your engagement with 1build did not meet your expectations. I do want to address a few points that I hope can shed some light on our culture: - We are extremely transparent with our decisions and metrics. We update everyone on the team on the weekly basis with KPIs like revenue and runway as well as publish progress on our OAKs (an internal version of the OKR framework). - Every major decision is discussed and debated at the company all hands. We have a format for publishing decisions (we call "testfit") that summarizes why a certain decision is being made and welcomes feedback from everyone on the team. We would not be able to run a company without the input of the folks we hire. - We invest heavily in teammate learning and development. In the past we have hired coaches to upskill our more junior engineering and go-to-market teammates into management roles. We also have paid for teammates's online classes and encourage them to explore new opportunities for learning. - "hustle" is not our cultural value. But we do believe stepping up to a challenge, delighting our customers, and winning together.

Pros

Pay is good but not worth it.

Cons

Management in general is a con. Running the business in the ground and the business is falling fast and the product isn’t reliable.

Thanks for this review, we value all feedback whether negative or positive. As a startup there a lot of ups and downs--and I can see how this might create a feeling of a rollercoaster. Nonetheless, we care a lot about our product and customer experience. As any other startup, we've also iterated a lot on the initial codebase which caused some tech debt. But over the last 4 months we've worked relentlessly to improve our product and released v2 that has achieved some of the highest stability and customer satisfaction metrics we've seen for any company of our stage (give it a try for yourself with a free trial on 1build.com!). We are solving tough technical and go-to-market challenges across the board, but as a team we embrace the challenge and always strive for excellence.

Incompetent founders sunk this ship

Pros

They paid well at the time, not anymore. I want to wholeheartedly apologize to everyone who was wronged by this company in any way, including customers. You did not deserve it and you deserve better. 1build did not deserve you. There are better companies out there employing people who actually see and value you as a human being. See you there!

Cons

I do not believe that 1build has what it takes to make it as a company unfortunately. It starts with incompetent leadership segues into failed vision and quickly trickles all the way down to unsatisfied customers, at least when they existed. Now, 1build has no customers because it has repeatedly failed to prove that people actually want the product and it has taken a backwards approach to product development. Let's see if they can convince an enterprise company to buy their fancy spreadsheet. Going through the list here: - Vision is crumbling. When I joined, the vision was grand and seemed attainable. Execution and strategy from leadership has been utterly disastrous. - Zero diversity. We maxed out around 3/30 women (at a single time). No efforts to change this. - Working people to the bone with unrealistic expectations (or generally failing to set them up for success) and then disposing of them when they "underperform". - We were told at a recent company offsite that we had plenty of runway and constantly reassured that the strategy in place would carry us through an economic downturn. Here we are, two layoffs later. At a 30 person company, this is beyond shameful and reckless. - They consistently did not put people first. You can't run a successful business without treating people well (this does not mean just paying them well). Everyone is seen/treated as disposable. - There is little trust and this boils down to leadership having no clue how to hire people and subsequently don't trust them to perform. The people you hire trust you to deliver on your promises and leadership at 1build has continuously failed them. So many people hired/fired, what a disgrace. - There is no transparency. - Constant double standards from leadership. They laid off half of the company then held an offsite for the remaining employees in Cancun. CEO buys a house in Miami weeks before layoffs. - Mismanagement of money is rampant and reckless - No strategy or direction. In the past year, we have flip flopped between Sales-Led Growth and Product-Led Growth, mostly because leadership seems to have no idea what either mean or when to apply them. - Constantly changing "policies" around things like severance and parental leave. People being treated differently based on how they felt that day. - Culture means absolutely nothing to leadership, despite their declared "values". You have to EMBODY values, you can't just say them. Atmosphere reeks of fear, micromanagement and general toxicity. This ship (well, dingy) is sinking fast. Stay far away if you value your sanity and security.

Like many other startups in 2022, we unfortunately had to change our strategy and let some folks go. In every case, we have offered generous severance and active support in finding new opportunities. We have placed many people at other firms in the process, enabling them to transition smoothly. We recognize that a layoff is extremely traumatic, but we tried our best to help those impacted. After a difficult 2022, our company has made rapid product investments and grown to 30,000+ happy customers. We have launched two new products that have received best-in-class user engagement, growth, and satisfaction metrics. We have also secured major partnerships with construction distributors and other software platforms. Most importantly, we are on a path to break even, which means we've set up our company to be in a stable financial position going forward. 1build is, more than ever, a fast-paced, challenging, and exciting place to grow and create something big in the construction tech industry.
