Pros

701 is part of the Knightsbridge Group, so named after a fashionable area of London, UK. The other restaurants in the Group include The Bombay Club, NoPa, The Oval Room, Rasika, Rasika West, Ardeo + Bardeo,Bibiana and Bindaas. All are very successful and most regularly make Washingtonian Magazine's top 100 list. Rasika West was the only restaurant in the entire area that was voted among TripAdvisor's top 25 in the U.S. The owner has twice been named Washingtonian Magazine's "Restauranteur of The Year" and has received many other awards with much recognition. So he is obviously very skilled at developing and managing restaurants. But that's where it ends..

Cons

Unfortunately the owner's people management skills are the inverse reciprocal of his restaurant management skills. He was born in India and is a member of the higher castes, where people do not work in restaurants, just own them. So by definition everyone who works for him is inferior and that colors his treatment of employees. His disposition is very mercurial and he is given to abusive, even profane outbursts against employees, sometimes even in front of his guests. While servers can earn very good money on tips, salaried employees are paid near the bottom of what he has to pay to attract any talent at all. He does not give raises and rarely promotes from within. He pays everyone in paper checks on Fridays causing employees the major inconvenience of cashing their paychecks at his banks. The company has no email server so all employees must use their personal email addresses to communicate with each other and management. There are no company credit cards so managers must advance the company from their own credit cards for any unforeseen expense and then seek reimbursement. While he does provide basic medical insurance it does not include vision or dental. He offers no retirement program, probably because he expects everyone to quit well before retirement and they do. Turnover is high particularly among managers and sometimes acrimonious. I've heard of two who threw down their keys and stormed out. This results in part from his understaffing restaurants to save labor costs. I've seen managers who routinely had to work 11-12 hour days. He cares little about the welfare of his employees and demanded all report to work during the January 2016 blizzard when everything was closed and officials were telling everyone to stay home because it was too dangerous to travel. I could go on but the picture should be clear. Servers can make very decent money from tips. Everyone else gets a basic paycheck, poor treatment and no future.

Pros

When it's good it's good. Sometimes you can make up to $600 a night.

Cons

Drama with the servers. Poorly managed. Owner doesn't care about his employee's.
