Pros

I was fortunate to work at A.O. Smith. The company has a great culture with good benefits & pay. Their IT has recently been centralized to a single location (before every location had its own IT staff). With that, if you have a good relationship with management, you will likely be able to be a part of that molding process to pave the way for A.O. Smith's future. Work/life balance is decent.

Cons

With the centralized IT that I mentioned in the Pros section, there are some also Cons to it. Because the IT has been recently centralized, they are working out many, many kinks that should be have been in place for a multi-billion dollar, publicly traded company. Processes/procedures/policies are a continual work-in-progress. The tools that are a typical IT standard are non-existent due to the frugal mentality of the IT budget. This causes IT employees to work harder, not smarter. Suggestions/improvements are often disregarded either due to budget and/or your reputation with management. With that said, it is apparent that management treats employees very differently based on their opinion of them. The bottom line is if you get in good with management, then you have it made here.

Good company but pay is not great compared to other employers

Pros

It's a very stable company that isn't affected as much by economic downturns like some other companies because when you need a water heater you'll buy one instead of waiting. Benefits are competitive with most large companies. Management is open and receptive to being challenged for the most part, and the culture is good. Micromanagement isn't an issue. They hire you and trust you to do your job.

Cons

Turnover is a big issue because the pay isn't great compared to competitors. Their philosophy is to start people at the low end of the pay scale and have you top out in the middle of the pay scale, regardless of experience and performance. It's worse if you work at a smaller plant because you tend to wear many hats but only get paid for one job. Career paths aren't very clear either because people with the same title at different plants may have very different job duties.

Terrible Management

Pros

Flexibility to talk with co-workers freely

Cons

Upper management only cares about their bonuses. Employees are grossly under paid, and when you approach them about advancement they just keep yanking you around so they don't have to pay you want your worth. Some many amazingly talented the company let walk because they didnt want to be competitive they would prefer to get cheap unreliable labor. Management will turn there back on you quickly! They say they want to know how to better the company, but once you say they need to spend some money in order to create a safer work place for the people actually making the projects and running the tests...they turn it down because it doesn't affect them. During the middle of winter management let the shop door remain open for weeks making the shop areas freezing not even trying to accommodate the workers affected by the conditions. Management had all of their cabinets painted in the shop areas without ventilation, again not affecting them in the front offices but affecting all the technicians in the shops. HR was never around, never answered any concerns and literally was never in the building to do their job. Overall the company chooses to punish the actual workers and reward management that is never there and are the problem.
