Harmful culture, toxic environment

Pros

The EXTERNAL mission of the organization, good retirement match after 2 years

Cons

All of the cons people listed below are true. The AACR is a toxic and harmful environment that is run by fear, intimidation, and with no trust in or care for its employees. The response to the pandemic and the push to return to the office was unnecessary and outdated. The leadership “listened” to the concerns raised by numerous employees and ultimately denied everyone’s exemption requests to continue to work from home citing the need for collaboration and that there is no work from home policy - despite successfully doing so for almost 2 years. After we DID return to the office, I could count the number of times on one hand that I had a face-to-face chat or meeting. Every meeting was still on Teams and people’s cameras remained off. The morale is so low. However, the AACR has been a toxic environment long before the pandemic and it starts with and continues to be so because of the CEO. She exhibits favoritism toward certain employees - mainly men. She regularly gossips and speaks poorly of certain employees and external stakeholders. She runs the place through fear, intimidation, and manipulation. It is her way or no way. She says completely inappropriate things which I am shocked haven’t caused lawsuits. She micromanages down to even the smallest task causing significant bottlenecks to any process or progress and then it is usually blamed on employees anyway. Her style only trickles down to her senior leadership who are not empowered and defer to her. There is no investment in employees. There are no opportunities for professional development, growth, or education. There is an external mission of the organization but there are no internal core values. This is a scientific organization and that aspect of the organization should be led by a Chief Scientific/Medical Officer with a qualified scientific background and not at the whim of senior leadership who often make appointments through popularity or status. Technology, record keeping, and marketing need a major overhaul. Systems and approaches are archaic. It is impossible to discuss any of this with the HR department who may be the most biased and gossipy department of all. They are a reflection of the organization’s discriminatory practices. I’ve been more valued and appreciated in my new position since I started there than my entire time at AACR.

Pros

The only nice thing I can say about this place is that the location is excellent. The office at 6th and Chestnut is conveniently located near public transportation, amazing restaurants, shopping, and fun spots for happy hour after work. (Not that you could take advantage of much of it, since the CEO has a taskmaster mentality that trickles down to all management levels and ruins pretty much any chance you have of taking a lunch break or leaving work on time.)

Cons

Where should I begin? The CEO loves herself, her whole self, and nothing but herself, so help the rest of us. The pay and benefits are mediocre for any average, non-leadership staff member and the turnover rate is very high for a reason. You can expect minimal respect for your personal life or time outside of work, and the demand for night/weekend/holiday work is high if you are in a department that travels for the AACR's conferences and special events. Do yourself a favor and don't bother accepting a job offer here.

Pros

Good location, nice holiday parties.

Cons

A simple search on Glassdoor comparing the AACR's CEO approval rating (33%) with its competitor ASCO (91%) will tell you volumes. And if you review their work from home benefits they are light years ahead of the AACR with their policies. Its embarrassing to see how many of our leaders consistently ask "What's ASCO doing?", then try to mimic and fall up incredibly short. Simply stated, the AACR does not care about its employees and that is a direct reflection of its leadership and CEO. In the midst of Covid as the delta variant is going through nation, as cold and flu season is about to approach, as other more progressive companies decide that it's not worth it for their employees to come in until the following spring and summer. The AACR decides, hey, let's bring everyone back cause we value face to face collaboration. Let's talk about the employee feedback on this. No one at the company was asked how they felt about coming back, none! Instead it was done through proxy of the directors and if you've been at this company long enough it's filled with yes-men/women cronies who will say whatever the CEO wants to hear. We get a callous email about how our CEO listened to her directors to get a pulse of the company. Oh yea, we did get an employee survey through all of this and all it asked is "are you vaccinated?" that's it! They only care about their legal obligation. There was no, how would you feel about coming back? Do you have kids that are unvaccinated? There is absolutely no empathy or concern cause in the end the company just doesn't care.
