Pros

Good and nice people to work Interest and challenging projects Good social events

Cons

A “wannabe” mid to large size company currently having growing pains and is still stuck with a small company upper management style Very top heavy structure, with young and inexperience senior staff ( really, how can someone be a technical or management director with only 10 years of experience?) Peter's principle is well evident in this company: Most of the staff have now reached their level of incompetence and inexperience (especially at the senior management level), due to "forced" and early promotions This is because the company is reluctant to hire experienced people for mid to senior positions because it is "easier" to manipulate and format junior staff to become "Yes-man" staff and to integrate better the company's "cult" Salaries are not matched to the current roles and responsibilities. They are only based on years of experience and recruitment agency salary tables. E.g., a 7-year-old experience associate in AKT will most likely earn a senior engineer salary in the market (because that is what the recruitment tables say so) Annual Bonus are small and they seem to follow the same “one-size fits all” criteria to everyone. They don’t reflect individual performance. Bad work/life balance. Mental health is a real problem in this company. On several occasions, politics have more impact on the project decisions than technical aspects.

Company gone downhill

Pros

- History of high-profile projects. - Flexible working (which is implemented begrudgingly).

Cons

- Image and career progression - being a good engineer is not enough to succeed here. There are a lot of false promises. They want young, 'loud' personalities, people who are social, people who they can bring to the forefront to show off. Those people progress very fast here. Simply working hard, working lots of hours, never saying no, generally being a very competent engineer will not grant you promotion, you'll be exploited for that trait. -False promises and bullying. - Looking through other recent reviews, it appears that most of the cons have been made already; sub-par pay, overtime, current MD not being good, under-resourcing etc. - Not once offered to expense staff for any wfh equipment, or relief since before the pandemic. - Have forced ultimatums on staff to leave, and then telling the rest of the company that they “Chose to leave.” It technically can’t be called a redundancy, but it is. - Resourcing is currently so bad due to the volume of people leaving that the general morale of staff is at an all time low. Under-experienced staff are unable to keep up with project demands as workload increases and the company keep taking on more work. This, coupled with the sub-par pay with the cost of living, is enough to make you want to look elsewhere. You really do feel like the company is going backwards with taking care of the mental health of staff. - Promotions and pay rises are miniscule, nowhere near inflationary rate. - IT hardware outdated. - Company generally still has the ‘Everything will return back to normal’ thinking. They hate people filling out flexi forms because they don’t want to set a precedent.

Negative working environment

Pros

Interesting projects Work with good architects

Cons

Unprofessional management, senior staff regularly speak badly about other members of staff and other companies Constant expected overtime with no reward Promotions based on years of experience rather than competency so lots of inexperienced senior staff members who have been promoted too early and no opportunity to progress more quickly Salary is below average Projects are seriously under resourced A very negative and unhappy working environment, this could be due to the constant reminders we were all ‘inefficient’ during covid In desperate need of updating IT systems Huge staff turnover, roughly 50% since March 2020 which highlights the ongoing problems with this company Senior management are reluctant to listen to staff members problems and advice, very stuck in their ways and not at all open to change No drive for chartership Very common to get stuck on one type of project due to the way work is won by each design director and delegated to specific teams Difficult to get any site experience or attend external meetings as a design engineer, no real responsibility is given to you for the first few years at least Bullying mentality among a lot of senior members of staff, they make you feel as though you are a resource rather than a team member
