Lack of Direction

Pros

interesting industry, no day is the same

Cons

lack of direction from management, training is subpar, lot of efforts to "increase efficiency" but at the expense of quality underwriting. almost like the company would like to be completely automated, so future at the company feels unstable. No recognition for hard work, and the perks are stripped away. a few years ago to now is very different, "perks" are so they can pat themselves on the back, not actually change. Anonymous surveys are not anonymous by department, and with small departments it's obvious, so it's not authentic. Other companies offering 20k+ more per year.

Inexperienced Leadership

Anonymous employee

Pros

pretty office, fairly good reputation in the industry

Cons

ALPS self promotes as a great place to work- even investing in the awards that bear that title, but management was unwilling and unable to provide recognition or back up the great place to work title, "Anonymous" surveys done annually are brought up in team settings and performance reviews- so didn't feel anonymous. Not a culture of growth. Some departments have low to no turnover, some departments have had absurdly high turnover. Did not feel like there were any efforts to mitigate those losses. Leadership is inexperienced so it felt directionless. Politics were often a discussion which felt uncomfortable.

All feedback is welcome. We use an outside vendor for our annual Employee Engagement Survey to ensure anonymity. In 2024 we provided staff a handout of how survey data is collected and how that information is anonymized and provided back to management, With those aggregated findings then reported back to all staff during our every other week all-company meeting. We encourage employees to gain deeper insight into the insurance industry and support this insight by covering the cost for certifications, continuing education and recognition within the Insurance Industry (i.e. Emerging Leaders awards). We are proud to have received multiple awards over numerous years as an “employer of choice”, recognizing ALPS as having a great culture. We take pride when we are nominated for awards directly by staff. As of 2023 we implemented in-house focus groups where aspects of our business are reviewed and improvements suggested by the employees who voluntarily offer to participate in the improvement review process. These focus groups have been led by non-management employees. We continue (2024) to be a small company with a flat organizational chart where everyone has a voice and can make an impact.

Pros

ALPS is an excellent company to work for. In the last several years, it has really hit its stride and the positive potential is tangible. I love that ALPS is a lean mid-sized company because I directly experience the positive results of what I do and build. Every day, I know I make a difference, instead of being anonymously lost somewhere in the basement of a massive corporation. The people are smart, fun to work with as teammates, and really care about the company and each other. The management is intelligent, fair, transparent, future-minded, and sets priorities that create value for customers, employees, and other stakeholders, including the community. The benefits are good, and HR is open to suggestions about ways to make things even better.

Cons

Some people might think insurance is boring, but it's actually quite dynamic and, due to its complexity, there is always something new to learn.
