Pros

Overinflated salaries. Worked directly with a good group of people. Surrey Research Park is nice and has lots of wildlife (who would probably be more competent than some at ANGLE).

Cons

Oblivious to the issues, or simply don’t care. No consequences for idiotic financial decisions and poor planning, and only interested in the opinions of those at the top, with no consideration for those actually affected. An interesting choice to pack full the senior management team with a CCO and a CSO at a time when there were major financial restraints elsewhere, and a refusal to approve small projects and lab-based positions for a fraction of the cost. Overall weird company structure, with pointless departments (Glassdoor won’t let me be more specific) that could be more efficiently integrated to prevent having ‘middle men’, overlapping, and people going around with little to do. A tendency to have incompetent and under qualified people in higher positions, particularly in mid/higher management. Generally no consequences for incompetency. Certain departments are very poorly managed and get away with a lot (Glassdoor won’t let me be more specific). Money was recently wasted on a very poorly organised (and pointless) promotional campaign where there was no understanding of what was actually being demonstrated. Staff in lower/lab-based positions not treated very well, no procedures or consistency in place regarding growth/promotions, and very few opportunities to actually develop your skills and progress. The pre-fix ‘Senior’ gets thrown in front of a lot of people’s positions, with no actual change in responsibilities, and some people may see multiple promotions a year, particularly if they are already quite high up. Contrary to a recent review (Glassdoor won’t let me be more specific), it is difficult for more junior members to actually progress and develop skills within a top heavy company, and this is an example of one of the major issues where unqualified and unapproachable people are placed in senior positions, leading to a mass exodus of junior staff members within a short period. As a company that relies on a ‘medical device’ for the services and products it aims to provide, there is zero interest (or sufficient internal expertise) in device development. Ultimately, they will fall behind competitors in the liquid biopsy market with an outdated mindset and obsolete technology.

Pros

Free shuttle bus from train station to surrey research park. Great kitchen, facilities and amenities although the spaces are limited and get crowded at lunch time. Cant even eat at your own table without annoying other people. Have potential in the patent for liquid biopsy. However there are other companies in Surrey Research Park alone that do liquid biopsy with bigger reputation.

Cons

It seems like a lovely place to work when I first started but then on the second day when I was introduced to the training folders I know it was going to go downhill from there. Along the way the management and the decision making that took place was ridiculous as decisions were always made without involving people who actually did the job in the labs. When you tried to communicate, make an improvement or prompt suggestion nothing happened, let alone to tackle the actual problems. And peole got told off many times for doing so as miscommunications when they were just trying to raise the issues around. There are so many people leaving, more than ever. Evidently right so when there are things like fear-based leaderships, mistrust, micro-managing (they sent people to SPY on you!), overworking people that are not getting paid, undervalued, pushing to get the work done and many more and I have not even scratched the surfaces. Management are not realistic and will let you do unncessary and excessive tasks. Any efforts and questions you brought upon were futile against them as they will do whatever they could to defend themselves. They got away many times even when they were clearly at wrong and it was almost impossible to reason with them despite having concrete evidence and justifications. It was demoralising enough to put up with them and it has only evolved worse after few months which made me believe that some people there are incompetent regardless of their titled positions. You are a number, and nothing more. The place prevented internal promotions many times and the reason behind it is shocking. Not surprising as most of the promotions are not even merit-based or performance-based. Which in turn the responsibilities will only press on some other people unnecessarily. Save yourself. This place will only deteriorate your mental health (they will just hand over a card to you to contact the helplines)

Pros

Pay is good for the skill level of work (technician and scientist I both require lower than graduate level laboratory skills). Flexible working hours depending on the manager.

Cons

Very blatant nepotism seen in the largest department of the UK site. Hiring and promoting friends of managing staff, leading to low staff morale and an overall toxic environment. Managers are clearly inexperienced and this reflects in the high level of staff turnover. Horrendous attitude to the 2020 pandemic, making laboratory staff come in through the first wave lockdown, working unsociable hours with no managers on site, and not paid overtime or unsociable hours pay. Clear favouritism within teams, with only some individuals put forward for internal promotions and skill development, whilst others deliberately held back. Very typical for a start-up company, so I was unsurprised but let down nonetheless. This company is deemed to fail with its current staff culture.
