An Unfortunate Experience

Pros

There's a KFC close by so you can drown your sorrows in Chicken.

Cons

I'm not going to prattle on with a large list of cons (there are many). Instead I will cover just a couple of the major offenders: The fully non-relational database is among the worst I've ever dealt with. More frustrating than the design and implementation itself, is managements INSANE views on the existing system and their complete rigidity to even consider reviewing its problems. Project leaders are so technically inept that it is truly shocking they're in the position they're in. With many fundamental flaws in the system, you can't simply sit down and talk through the issues with those leading the project as they simply don't have the technical capacity to have an intelligent conversation about the problems (the attitude of "well it's been like this for 20+ years" is held by most of those with any kind of power). I witnessed quite a bit of office bullying during my time with Aareon, juniors were targeted and made to feel pretty horrendous during normal working hours - it got unbelievably unbearable, felt like comprehensive school. They say you learn from the bad experiences in life, well if you want an injection of bad experiences to learn from, this is the place for you. Juniors beware.

Pros

Aareon UK used to be good company to work for. It was clear the Head of People really strived to make it so, as you can see by the responses to other reviews, and the old leadership enabled this. Sadly, new leadership has come along who don't share the same view of employee satisfaction, and the HoP has now left as as a result, so I'm not feeling hopeful for the future. There are some great people here, but not for long, I fear.

Cons

The ultimate problem with the company is the heavy handed control that the parent German company imposes on it. The main issue being it's not been given the investment needed and as a result, the customer experience has suffered. This has got worse since the German company company is now owned by private investors, but has always been a problem. The effect of this fund starvation is when salaries have not kept pace with the market, people have left for better pay, they've not been replaced and so product quality has gone down along with the reputation amongst customers, and hence profits have suffered. Recently, they got rid of the old leadership as they wouldn't toe the line and have brought in a new CEO whose only priority seems to be short term profitability. The inevitable downsizing is now occurring. It's the classic problem of a company being run by bean counters.
