Pros

The product is one of the better ones on the market and could potentially do well.

Cons

The C-Level folks are so invested in squeezing every last drop of productivity out of their employees that I would not be surprised if you told me they'd all had an empathy lobotomy. They underpay their staff, expect overtime, and reduce benefits while telling the team that they're all in it together.

Thank you for your review. This feedback is of course disappointing and we’re very sorry to hear you developed a negative view of the company during your time here. At Ably we strongly believe in fostering a positive culture within our team. To us that means, amongst other things, that employees have a healthy work/life balance, that salaries are fair and competitive, and that we provide benefits that are amongst the best available for a company of our size. We’re very proud of the work we do in these areas which is what we want to respond to some of the points raised. Firstly, we are focussed on productivity and will continue to be. We’re a growing scaleup with ambitious goals, and focussing on efficiency is essential if we want to be successful. But productivity doesn’t equal working longer hours: we do not expect regular overtime from our staff and we actively check in on work-life balance via managers. The flexibility we offer is often one of our highest scoring areas in employee feedback: 90% in our most recent survey. We don’t have a clock in/clock out culture at Ably; ultimately we care more about what gets done than the hours people work. Some people work longer hours because they’re committed to what we’re building, and of course there are occasional circumstances where overtime is necessary (e.g. if there’s a critical client issue). For a business with our ambitions and standards this is sometimes unavoidable - but we have policies in place to account for this, including compensation and holiday in lieu where appropriate. With regards to pay, salaries at Ably are based on extensive market research of what’s competitive for companies in our industry and of a similar size and scale. We believe this data-driven approach is the correct one and helps us to avoid subjective pay discussions, which can lead to significant unintentional discrepancies, favouritism, and discrepancies in ethnic or gender groups, etc. It also means we can state with confidence that salaries at Ably are in the upper percentile in comparison with the market. The full list of benefits we offer employees is publicly available at ably.com/ukbenefits and ably.com/usbenefits. The only benefit we have reduced (from what is advertised here) was scaling back the amount of designated learning and development time we offer employees; from 2 days per month to 1 day per month. We took this decision as some teams felt this allocation was reducing their ability to have an impact and the data told us that only a very small percentage of people across the business were using the full allocation. We believe that offering employees 12 days per year to dedicate to learning and development offers more parity across the company and is still a very generous policy for a company of our size (and more can be granted at a manager’s discretion). We always endeavour to do better and improve ourselves, and we’d welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns in more detail and provide additional clarity on our decision making processes - please feel free to reach out to anyone in the People Team via email (people.team@ably.com).

A Mixed Experience with Room for Improvement

Pros

I have worked at Ably for a significant period of time and have a mixed experience overall. While there are some positive aspects, there are also several areas that left much to be desired. One of the positive aspects of working at Ably is that in the past, the company was known for providing excellent benefits and competitive salaries. However, in recent times, the salary structure has become somewhat stagnant and has not kept up with the rising cost of living, which is very disappointing. The company offers a fair amount of flexibility and autonomy, which is commendable. Compared to some other companies, the work/life balance is relatively better, although it is not without its flaws. This flexibility allows for a certain degree of independence and the ability to manage my own workload, which is appreciated. Another positive aspect of Ably is its main product. The product is solid and has a promising future.

Cons

One crucial aspect that determines the true character of a company is how it treats its employees when they depart. In the past, when employees left, we would only learn about their departure through a brief announcement, leaving a sense of isolation and a feeling of being shunned. This stands in stark contrast to other workplaces where leaving is handled with dignity, fostering a strong network of former employees who still feel valued. Unfortunately, Ably recently underwent some sad changes, which created a grim atmosphere within the organization. The communication surrounding these changes is lacking, with a Slack channel that feels lifeless and restricted from discussing any details. Additionally, Ably's shift from preaching a culture of openness and honesty to turning off chats during meetings where important questions about future careers may arise is disheartening. Employees should feel encouraged to ask tough questions and seek clarity, especially during uncertain times. This recent change contradicts the values that Ably once stood for, leaving employees feeling unheard and uncertain about their professional growth. Furthermore, there is a frequent and drastic redesign of teams and working methods, which leaves little room for employees to adapt and adjust to the changes. Micromanagement has become increasingly prevalent within the teams, putting pressure on delivering tasks without considering the wider context or understanding why certain processes may take longer to implement. This constant scrutiny gives the impression that employees are merely numbers on a spreadsheet, being evaluated solely based on how quickly they can deliver results. It is clear that a few individuals have been given roles that exceed their abilities, leading them to become excessively controlling. They constantly inquire about delivery timelines, creating arbitrary deadlines that are consistently pushed forward, as they don't truly represent actual deadlines. To summarize, Ably is a company that performs well in favorable circumstances but becomes quite unpleasant when faced with challenging times. Unfortunately, the current situation reflects a rough period for the company.

Thanks for your review. While we find it hard to read and do disagree with most of it, we can feel the weight of your words and cannot dispute the experience you felt you had - that we will acknowledge and apologise for. We never want anyone to have a bad experience at Ably. I hope in the three years you’ve been with us, you felt there were times you were able to grow and have enjoyed being a part of the Ably team. You touch on a few delicate topics there that we do need to address. The first one is in relation to our finances. Your comments imply that Ably has spent money frivolously and that poor financial decisions have led to the business having to make difficult decisions - this is not accurate. As a rapidly scaling business it has absolutely been necessary for us to invest in our growth - we have always operated under the principle of frugality and this investment has been in line with recognised industry benchmarks for companies in our phase of growth. The reality is that macro economic conditions have changed in the past 12 months - that’s not an attempt to abdicate responsibility, but leadership has an obligation to react to those changes to safeguard the future of the business. The next point we’d like to address is in reference to a “white boys club” - this again is not fair. We have a steadfast commitment to diversity at Ably and the proportion of Ablyans from underrepresented groups is well above the industry standard, both at leadership level and across the entire team. We always endeavour to do better and improve ourselves, and we’d welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns in more detail and provide additional clarity on our decision making processes - please reach out if you’re still in the team with us on Slack, otherwise you can reach out to someone in the People Team via email.
