Pros

Pay... that about covers it.

Cons

Horribly outdated ambulances, you’ll run 24/7, there are three regions in Texas and they’ll shuffle you to all of them with no system in mind. Sketchy calls, and expect to have upper management send you back every report. Which you will do 3 hours after your shift ended. You won’t get off on time.

Pros

BYOD dispatching on your own phone (though not reimbursed); lots of opportunity for overtime; good place to get your feet wet; awesome partners

Cons

New CEO showed up to an all-hands meeting in a Land Rover with a Louie Vuitton belt buckle, asking a crowd of people making an unlivable wage to "live within the inch" and somehow work even harder for the company. Former top management made national news for inhumane racist commentary. Supervisors care only about staffing trucks and truck uptime, often running mechanically unsafe trucks and demanding unsafe working hours from employees

Company in a death spiral

Pros

The only pro about working at this company is that through constant abuse from management and punishing work load, any other place will seem easy and like heaven in comparison. So if you're a bit of a masochist, it could work. This used to be a really great place to work, but changes in management and priorities and ownership have really run this place into the ground and turned it into the worst private EMS company in Houston. Went from being one of the most respected companies to a laughing stock in the community. This company will probably be closed within in a year (being generous) unless they get their act together.

Cons

The list of cons in endless. --Outdated/broken equipment and trucks. Oh, the monitor hasn't been serviced in 3 years? Well just reset the error code and hope for the best. The AC isn't working in the patient compartment and its 107 degrees outside? Deal with it, there isn't another truck to put you on. SPO2 sensor malfunctioning? Still gotta run that vent call without it. If its an essential piece of equipment to your job and to patient care, there's a 25% chance of it working and a 100% chance that management doesn't care. -- No regards for employee safety. 800lb patient? You can lift them with only 4 people, no problem. Oh, and the MANUAL bariatric stretcher has been malfunctioning for 6 months and routinely causes near injury, but it hasn't been serviced and you still have to run the call. Too exhausted to stay awake at the wheel because you've been running for 23 hours straight without a break? If you refuse the call, youre fired. If you say youre too tired to safely work your job, they write you up or take you off the schedule. Safety concerns are ignored completely or never addressed, to the point of negligence. -- Stations are completely run down and disgusting. One station has a flea infestation that hasn't been addressed. Another doesnt have working AC. --Benefits are overpriced and dont cover very much. --Pay is mediocre at best. Compared to other companies its higher, but when you factor in the workload and stress and general BS you have to put up with, its not worth it. -- Never having the supplies you need. Need narcs or iv start kits? Thats gonna take 3-4 shifts before you get them. Hope you don't have to run anything over BLS in that time. --Terrible management. Rude, demeaning, hateful people in management and its very much an 'old boys club' that happens to include some women. Supervisors aren't selected based on their ability to do the job, but rather who they know and have connections with regardless of their fitness to lead. If you have a problem and go to a supervisor, youre more likely to get a sarcastic response or to be told to deal with it, and that's if you even get a response. -- Like keeping your license? They'll falsely report you to the state for 'late reports' or anything else they can think of if you cause them trouble by making a stink about real issues or if you quit. Oh, and the whole reports fraud thing too. Is there medical necessity for this patient to go by ambulance? No? Were still gonna bill it as BLS and youre going to write it that way or else you'll be written up. Hope youre cool with medicare fraud. --The uniforms are ugly as sin, super uncomfortable and now you have to pay for them, instead of being provided for you or reimbursed. --Dispatchers have no medical training or understanding. This can lead to a basic crew being dispatched to an ALS call and being forced to take it because 'there aren't enough trucks'. This affects patient outcomes and is dangerous for patient health, but is asking a medic to operating above their patch level. --Dispatchers in general are put on a pedestal of 'can do no wrong' when in fact most of them are a bumbling bunch of idiots with no idea how to handle normal call volume, much less busy volume. But again, dispatch can do no wrong and the crews are the idiots. --Like having nurses chew you out? This is the perfect place for you! You be dispatched to a call 2 hours past the estimate pickup time given by dispatch, and you have an hour drive to the call, so when you show up 3 hours late and the nurse is angry, guess who's fault it is! Yours! --Like having steady hours? Not at this company. Unexpectedly laid off half the staff, cut all overtime, and cut all FT employees hours from 48 to 36 or 40. No explanation given. Most employees rely on OT so this was a huge blow to the staff. They also cut the trucks down to bare minimum in an effort to cut costs, leading to 24 hour shifts without a moment of rest and running non stop. -- Profits over employee wellness, profits over patient outcomes, profits over everything. If it doesnt line the owners wallets, its wrong, and nothing matters but their money-- even patients lives. -- If you are any kind of a decent person who cares about your patients and doing the right thing, this company will literally beat that out of you until you are shellshocked and compliant. --Biggest con: Remember the racist owner that was racist on facebook and that they fired last year? Yeah, he's still an owner, and he still works there. That firing was all for show and hes still very much involved in the company operations, even out working on the ambulance providing medical care. So if that angered you, know that nothings changed.
