Pros

Started well, though deteriorated greatly since. Snacks and historic staff functions, before Covid.

Cons

First: It is very disappointing to see all of the critical reviews raised by colleagues being removed. Then it's very clear from the duplication of words in the other reviews that these are from HR or the Directors. It's frankly duplicitous to keep only the positive reviews and I know from talking to colleagues that this seen as very poor. The cons: -> It started well, though when the shine came off, it became obvious this company is very similar to other mid-range consultancies in terms of opportunities and fragility. -> The industry is going through a very rough patch and whilst our leadership talks a positive game, the cracks and fragility are obvious. It is very worrying for all of us, especially when we were told things were more robust than they clearly are. -> HR works like a propaganda machine. Not just through the deletetion of negative reviews, but also in the vacuous communications towards well being. -> There's a lot of arrogance and misinformation towards the tech stack we use. It's frankly not that great, and useful for a narrow purpose, and behind the firms of Silicon Valley or immature to many better open-source projects. The biggest con is that Adaptive is just not as good an environment as many of the emerging consultancies or the bigger top-tier consultancies...... -> This is a gig business and the advantages of doing the gigs through Adaptive Financial are not obvious enough for the reduced compensation compared to working directly for the client. I expect this review to be deleted with all of the other critical reviews. Glassdoor, you should be evaluating all companies that only keep high scoring reviews.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. It's tough reading some of your points but nevertheless, we have to accept that this is/was your experience and learn from it. I want to address a key point, Glassdoor does not allow companies to take down reviews willy-nilly - there's even a note above this review that says: "Your trust is our top concern, so companies can't alter or remove reviews"! Both of those recent reviews, that I responded to, were, according to Glassdoor, removed by the posters; we have no control over what reviews remain on this page unless the review includes things such as confidential data (and neither of those reviews did). Furthermore, the accusation that all positive reviews are from my team or the directors is just not true. If it were the case, my team and the directors have done a poor job with too few glowing reviews! The comment about our mental health communications being 'vacuous' seems an overly keen effort to find something negative. We openly discuss and address mental health, we support staff with services such as our EAP programme and Mental Health First Aiders, as well as specifically addressing mental health issues that could have been brought on by Covid and lockdown. Our aim is not to be cerebral or to dazzle people with our knowledge of mental health issues, it's to encourage our colleagues to seek support and for many, these communications have been massively beneficial and have encouraged them to seek help. Regarding your comments on our tech stack - we make no apologies for it being designed for a narrow purpose. It’s designed to build front office trading systems, not general purpose systems or platforms. We use many open source projects where it is relevant but there is actually very little support in the open-source space when it comes to building fault-tolerant and low latency event-driven systems. To your comment about the industry going through a rough patch, of course it is! Covid and the associated lockdown have impacted billions of people and millions of companies - we're no different. The one thing that we have done, contrary to your point, is to be very transparent about how it's impacted us. After some of our updates in the early days of lockdown, I had people coming to me surprised at how candid Matt, our CEO, had been (he didn't put a gloss on anything). To your note on pay, we run quarterly salary reviews based upon the extensive and exemplary work of my team in scouring the market for data to make sure that we are paying well. Finally, we have no intention of deleting this review, or any others. There is clearly nothing here that breaches any of Glassdoor's policies and so, like every other review, it's left here for people to read and to make their own decisions about our company. Pros

I've worked at Adaptive for more than 3 years. During my time, I've been put on different projects and I have had the chance to grow and learn a lot. My colleagues were awesome. Not only was the technical level very high, but people were nice and happy to help (when not in a crunch, obviously). I've also been given a lot of autonomy on my projects. The directors were giving me the tools I needed to perform my job and were there if ever I needed help, but they were never micro-managing me. This allowed me to learn a lot and gave me a feeling of being in control of my project along with my colleagues. I have absolutely enjoyed my time at Adaptive and it is a great company to work at.

Cons

I see a few cons to Adaptive and I hope it gets better in the future. The first probably has to do with the nature of the work being done at Adaptive. It's a consultancy company. This means you have to be cut out for this kind of work. I feel the great deal of autonomy I experienced sometimes worked against me in some situations where I would have liked Adaptive to intervene, moments like when the client tries to impose a waterfall methodology or has other unreasonable requests. I also felt I was left on some projects for too long. This can be hard to balance, but after a project has clearly fallen into maintenance mode, I would have liked to be transferred on another project sooner. The projects I got to work on were not as interesting as I was promised when I was hired. I would not say Adaptive blatantly lied to me, but I was not given the chance to really work on a real-time system, which is the specialty of Adaptive. I worked on some projects where there were technical challenges of other kinds, and that was fine, but my last project was a real snooze fest.

Hello and thank you very much for your review - we genuinely value every single one. I'm glad that you had good professional growth with us and that your experiences with colleagues were awesome - we think that they're pretty terrific too! I'm delighted to read your views on our directors too - that's always our aim, to give you enough support that you feel comfortable but not so much that you feel directed. Regarding your comments on some of our projects, we hear you. We are working to get better at rotating our colleagues around projects (should they wish) so that they continue to get the growth, stimulation and satisfaction that they need. I'm sorry that you didn’t get to work on some of our more exciting projects; that's really where better rotation comes in. We always aim to land complex and challenging projects with interesting technology but on a few occasions, that doesn't happen. Our Sales team are doing a brilliant job, even during Covid, to secure the right kinds of projects that give our incredibly capable and driven colleagues the opportunity to continue to grow and use all of their skills. To your point on the Agile coaches and BA's working to train clients, we're actually doing that on some of our projects and have done so in the past but we acknowledge your point that this could be a great thing to do on some projects that aren't running as smoothly as we'd all like. As mentioned in previous reviews, our directors read all of these reviews and take action based on what they see, so I hope that when you are welcomed back for round 2 (seriously, please keep in touch), that you'll see some of the changes that you are looking for. Thanks again for sharing your perspective and experience, it's great to see that overall you were very happy here at Adaptive. Marie Downes - Chief Talent Officer

Pros

I have never worked at a company before who cares more about their staff welfare. Every time I have needed help, or someone else needs help, the management team jump into action. From HR to the CEO, everyone is willing to help, and will do whatever they can to make things better for you. The C-level management team are very accessible to everyone. They have grown quickly, and are all busy, but never too busy to listen to you or have a chat. It is lovely to have such a down to earth management team, who do not have a trace of arrogance, and make an effort to listen to your input and ideas, then thank you for them! I personally, have had many a meeting with the CEO, who has asked my opinion, listened to it, and made decisions based on it. How refreshing is that!? I love the diversity within the company. As a woman in tech, the workplace can sometimes be a lonely place, but here at Adaptive there is a broad spectrum of people from all walks of life, and this makes for a fabulous and diverse workplace. People here are seriously smart. Seriously. It is such a luxury to work with a bunch of superheroes who need little to no management oversight, get on with the job, and do a fantastic one at that. People here are also very friendly, and work together as a team, with a huge amount of mutual respect. There are plenty of social things that happen as well. It's a great office in London, with fab views out over the city.

Cons

As Adaptive are a growing company, they are evolving in their management structure to adapt to the growth and size. Sometimes they don't get this perfectly right, but on the plus side they recognise this and are constantly taking steps to change things and make things better all the time. For the same reason, Line Management is somewhat 'light' at Adaptive. Some people prefer this of course, whereas some perhaps more junior members of the team may feel a little lost. Again, it is something they are aware on and working on, which is very refreshing.

Thanks so much for this great review! We are so proud of the team of people that we have here at Adaptive and are thrilled that you are enjoying your career with our company. We don't get everything right, that's for sure but I'm really happy to tell you that we have plenty going on now that will address much of what you have mentioned in your 'cons'. Thanks for raising this as an issue and don't hesitate to let me know if there's anything else you think we should look at. Thanks again! Marie
