Pros

Good salary and benefits, that's it.

Cons

I have 15 years of successful experience as a librarian in both public and corporate settings. This job was an utter failure on so many levels. They falsely described the nature of the job in my interviews and falsely led me to believe that they would give me up to six months to acclimate to the job. Instead, they heaped unreal expectations on me to perform at some unreasonable level of performance only weeks into the position. I was even coming in early every day (working overtime) in order to get up to speed; this was not good enough. After one month with zero warning (sideblinded): I was dismissed from the job with a severance payment. They were exceptionally vague about the reasons why I was being let go. I have never in my life experienced anything as strange as working for AFSCME. They refer to each other as brothers and sisters: very cultish! I've worked in a wide variety of jobs and this is hands down one of the worst jobs I've ever had in my life. Beware!

Pros

The pay and benefits are fair, there is a staff union

Cons

They keep a year+ probationary period so that they can remove staff without following seniority or giving layoff notice. There is very little support or training available even apon request. The job duties are ambiguous making it easy for management to berate you for not prioritizing one thing over another even if it is desperately unclear what you should be doing any given day. The union as a whole does not understand social mapping and organizing and does not value it The union staff is overwhelmingly white male biased. Over time is only half the hourly wages but you are expected to work a lot of it Expect management to be cunning, tell you that you that you have leadership potential (or whatever it is that they think you want to hear) to get every bit of work out of you as possible. This is a trick. Maintain your work life balance.

Unprofessional environment

Pros

Health benefits was great, no premium. But I know for sure it won't last long. That is the only good thing.

Cons

Unprofessional selfish management. Force employees to pay money (big chunks) out of pay check to go to political campaigns. Horrible working hours (10-6pm) at HQ in D.C. No flexibility don't even try to change your working hours. No consideration to family or any personnel issues.
