Agora Data, Inc. - Not What It Seems

Pros

The experience at Agora Data, Inc. was a mix of promising beginnings and significant challenges. Initially, the company presented itself as a tight-knit, family-oriented startup with about eight years in business. The mid-level management team was competent, and there were several talented individuals in the company, making it a great place to collaborate. The CTO recommended that the company embrace agile methodologies, bringing in additional staff to support it. This shift appeared to improve product development and technology processes, and many employees in the “trenches” felt optimistic about the changes.

Cons

Issues arose within the business areas, particularly in sales and account management, where a “car dealership” mentality dominated. Most of these employees came from a sales background, and the work ethic and approach reflected that. If you didn’t produce, you were out. This environment led to a high turnover rate and a lack of alignment with the company’s software and product development goals. The leadership in these areas didn’t have the experience or understanding of how to run a software business, which led to repeated, misguided pivots and decisions that didn’t align with customer needs or product development best practices. Many of the C-level leaders, including the COO (who is the CEO’s son), lacked the experience and skills necessary to lead effectively. The COO, only 10 years out of college with limited work experience, was particularly unprepared for a leadership role. The CEO, while skilled at securing funding for the company’s business model, demonstrated erratic and unfocused behavior. He often made sudden decisions, including firing employees when he became upset, creating an unstable work environment. While the leadership preached values like transparency, psychological safety, and employee empowerment, the reality was quite different. Employees were told their input mattered, but frequent layoffs and the lack of clear communication undermined this narrative. The company even held an inspiring hackathon in January 2025, where cross-functional teams generated innovative ideas. However, in February 2025, the CEO’s mood shifted, leading to the termination of the CTO and about 20 employees, mostly from the technology and product teams, including developers, and those that were brought in to support the agile mindset. The company’s leadership repeatedly demonstrated that they lacked an understanding of how customer feedback and input should drive product development. The constant shifts in direction and lack of consistency made it clear that the business was struggling. If you’re looking for a company that values employee input, customer-driven product development, and provides growth opportunities, Agora Data is not the right fit. It seems the company is running out of money, struggling to produce revenue-generating products, and operating in a “command and control” environment with little room for learning or growth.

Pros

Some nice people and fun office environment

Cons

Senior leadership worries too much about looking good in the mirror, rather than facing reality. Extremely toxic workplace politics within management team, especially in IT and engineering. Leadership makes big promises to employees but rarely delivers on those promises. Instead, people are laid off. Forcing people to work in the office rather than remote. All engineering positions can be done fully remote, but the CTO needs to have his finger on people at all times. Extreme micromanagement. Horrible at spending money wisely, resulting in layoffs Stop with the horrible office parties and give people bonuses. No one wants to hang out with the customer service teams, as they are very unprofessional.

Pros

Competitive compensation for what is essentially a stagnant position

Cons

After several years at Agora Data, my experience ended with an abrupt layoff that exemplified many of the company's deeper issues. I was part of a mass tech team layoff conducted in rushed 5-minute calls where HR provided inconsistent information (details in the call didn't match later written communications). Questions from stunned employees were cut off as the call ended prematurely - basic preparation could have made this difficult situation more humane. Before we talk about working here, let's address what Agora Data is: Agora data is a traditional auto finance company that engages in IT cosplay so investors may think there’s a tech component. The Amish have embraced more technological innovation than Agora Data. Most concerning during my tenure was management's repeated assurances during all-hands meetings that "what we're doing isn't unethical" - something I'd never heard at previous employers, and which became more unsettling with each unprompted repetition. The core loan product runs on outdated 2000s technology that one person can configure - creating a critical bottleneck that leadership refuses to address. Good luck trying to scale that. Me and many of my peers on the tech team were told point blank by management that we could never have a path to a promotion, this was essentially a high paying dead end job. If you’re below the VP level there’s no career track, and if you’re above that you can get meaningless title promotions provided you ensure you’re a one man bottle neck. Leadership frequently pivots without clear direction. In one notable instance, the entire company spent a week internally "problem solving" by essentially guessing at issues, followed by leadership's week-long retreat to review findings. The outcome? A vague directive to "execute well" with no actionable items from all the collected input. Upper management, despite not being very technical, would micro-manage every tech decision giving employees little agency to improve the poor standard of tech while sacrificing any nimbleness the size of the team could’ve provided over more established market players.
