I worked at Airwallex full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

has funding looks good on a resume unlimited money in marketing

    Cons

nothing is working right on the inside hires people from elite schools who doesn't know anything. blame culture is strong whenever something goes bad and the company is a full-blown Chinese culture. There's nothing Aussie about the company besides being incorporated here if you're not from an elite school, don't think of even making a dent in your influence at the middle/top management CEO has an ego of an elephant, but doesn't know anything about the market, and micromanages everything

I have been working at Airwallex full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Some good people with good intentions are trying to fix this place but those people have no influence on the direction of the company.

    Cons

Be careful of the fake 5 star reviews. I suspect these were added by HR or the senior leadership. This is really a Chinese company, not Australian. The majority of the engineering workforce is based in Shanghai. The CTO and other early engineers based in Shanghai have very low standards. They often take shortcuts and leave a mess behind for others clean up. Please do a quick search on LinkedIn before deciding to join Airwallex to see how long on average employees last in this company. I bet it won't look promising. If the above is not enough for you, continue reading: - Toxic culture that's largely dominated by non-technical managers. Engineers are treated second class without a doubt - Uninspiring senior and executive leadership which micro-manages everyone - Company culture is incompatible with western and Australian values - The standard for the engineering practices is the lowest I have seen and I worked for several successful startups in the past. - Because the company is dominated by Chinese work culture, expect to be measured by a standard that you won't like

I have been working at Airwallex full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - intelligent and supportive colleagues - attractive product and proposition to support future growth - development opportunities - global presence - ambitious, energetic vibe - diverse and passionate leadership - huge improvements with new leadership structures, focus on culture, improved hiring processes - good focus on fun and team communication while working at home

    Cons

    - the pace is challenging, even for those who enjoy it you'll be wishing for an off-switch at times - lots of change in all areas, processes and products change faster than you would imagine possible - there is very little focus on improving the balance for employees, there is flexibility offered but the level of flexiblity is not consistent across teams. For some the expectation is that they will always be on and available

I have been working at Airwallex full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Airwallex is one of the few Unicorn startups in Australia and I believe has a tremendous amount of ongoing growth potential. Day to day, this means you actively feel part of the success of the business and are constantly challenged with new problems to solve / new roles to step into

    Cons

Like many high-growth companies, the environment can feel chaotic at times

I have been working at Airwallex full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Airwallex has a lot of positive press and at least some of the management & HR team are doing their best to address a toxic culture.

    Cons

We hire crazy number of new people from Seek. More than 6 have started and quite out of their depth, possible due to the AU Director being from Seek and hiring his buddies. Very bad nepotist.

    Airwallex Response

    July 6, 2020

In the first half of 2020, Airwallex has hired 142 people globally. 27 of those new starters have been in Australia. These new joiners have come from many different companies across Melbourne as well as interstate and internationally. People continue to be the number 1 priority for management - this includes hiring the right talent, ensuring we have the right retention and development programme in place, and ensuring that we build a diverse culture. We are a company whose culture is continually evolving and are always seeking to grow and improve. I see you have been with Airwallex for 1-2 years and so I hope you have seen the diverse range of people we have brought in to the company over this time. You would also know about our internal referral program, so I would encourage you to reach out to HR or your line manager with people who you think could be a great fit for any of our roles or to offer other ideas on companies we should be hiring from.

I have been working at Airwallex full-time for less than a year

    Pros

A high-growth Startup with LOTS of Pros!! I work as a Senior Software Engineer at Airwallex and I feel highly valued in my role. Definitely, management never asked anyone to write a false review. I write this review voluntarily and happy to be contacted by Glassdoor. The Pros in a nutshell: - Engineering driven company. Engineers are encouraged to have an entrepreneurial mindset. You are encouraged to drive the solutions design and be pro-active to identify some gaps in the requirements, like in most high-growth startup companies. If you expect all requirements to be all fed, then this is not an ideal place. - Work flexibility: Flexibility to work from home without any drama, flexibility to adjust your working hours to adapt with your family commitments. You can be upfront about your needs and then discuss a mutual flexible option that works best for the company, the team, and yourself. - Great pay (at or above market rates), with bonus stock options (equity). - Fully stocked drinks, healthy snacks, healthy drinks, fruits, coffee, etc. - Flat structure with a great autonomy and ownership. - Great rooms for growth and for creating an impact within the team and across teams. - Great coworkers, and in most cases you'll see a no-ego culture here. - If you show pro-activity to make an impact beyond your job role, it will be appreciated. You will need to drive this though. In a sense, you need to own where you want to grow in your career. - The management team in our Melbourne office have done an amazing job. They drive continuous improvement and a growth culture in the company, and they are doing their best to provide a safe culture where employees can communicate their feedback in a safe and supportive environment. - Interviewers were transparent about what you can and cannot expect, and about their experience of working at this company. Just make sure you ask them these questions. - New starters have a proper induction (i.e., there are rooms for improvement, but overall still quite solid). New starters are publicly recognised during the weekly company meeting. Different VP and department heads across different teams transparently share their vision, team's achievement, growth areas, and all the wins that we achieve as a company. - Solid IT equipments for employees and great office facilities.

    Cons

    - The startup challenge, a fast-paced environment, which I believe is common in any high growth startup with top investors. If you expect all requirements to be all fed, then this is not an ideal place for you. - Our engineering management team and HR are still working on improving some of our processes (i.e., engineering process and other general processes), so there are some growth areas in this space. They are constantly improving and getting better though, so I see this as an opportunity for employees to help drive the processes. - I strongly feel that some of the recent negative comments here on Glassdoor are over-exaggerated, mostly by disgruntled employees (which I believe are the culture damager in any company). Sadly, I happened to meet a few disgruntled employees when I happened to overheard their conversation on a very recent occasion. IMHO, this group of people always kept complaining anyway (or pretended to be busy with work) while many highly-driven members of the team are doing their best to deliver results and helping the company grow as a successful startup.
