Pros

The experience was so poor for mine and my colleagues' mental health, any pro is really obsolete

Cons

The culture here is absolutely toxic. Leadership is incredibly condescending and lacks any transparency or integrity. The organization is resistant to different perspectives to the point of feeling cult-ish. There's a huge disconnect between those who have been at the organization for a long time, and newer hires. More significant is All Stars' actual work and ideology... they present a pretty good veneer but really it's all based on a philosophical underpinning created by a psychotherapist in the 70's and not actual social justice or community engagement practice. They have no idea how to work with communities of color and refuse to learn (they think they're perfect and any feedback is met with defensiveness.) The entire organization is riddled with white saviorism and white protectionism. Without an actual understanding of racial structures of power and privilege, the message they portray to the young people and communities they're trying to serve is one that mirrors our society's inequitable structure, as opposed to challenging it. (ex. silencing students when discussing the racial bias they experience in their corporate internships, committing regular micro-aggressions both internally and externally, referring to updated ideas or criticism as being too PC, appropriating black stories, loads of cultural racism, fetishizing poverty, etc.)

Pros

I met some amazing people and received valuable career advice at the time. There are people who want to do great work, but unfortunately do not get the recognition they deserve.

Cons

As a former employee, it has been extremely sad to see how the organization has conducted itself during the pandemic (which just further underlines their favoritism, tokenism, and overall poor management practices). All Stars is an organization that preys on people who want to do good and exploits people's trauma for their own personal gain. I believed in the mission and truly enjoyed working at a grassroots level with communities, but this passion was taken advantage of in this cult-like "working in the trenches" environment. I was constantly expected to work far beyond my job description, had no work-life balance, and was gaslit and penalized any time that I raised my concerns or advocated to be paid fairly for my work. Because this was one of my first "professional" jobs, I was made to feel inferior and bullied by HR into respecting management that didn't respect me. Because I worked long hours and was paid so poorly, I couldn't afford to quit without another job lined up but also had no time to apply and interview elsewhere. I felt truly trapped and don't wish this feeling upon anyone, especially so early in their career! In the end, I am so grateful that I was laid off during the pandemic, because I was afforded the time to step back, regain my self-worth, and pursue a personally and financially satisfying career. As more time passes since I left All Stars, I can't believe that I put up with such a toxic work environment and am disgusted by the ways they are trying to capitalize on the world's long-overdue social justice reckoning with their out-of-touch messaging. Miss me with that 🙅‍♀️

Pros

Working around the youth

Cons

The organization is unorganized, pay is very low, they constantly give you work with no increase in pay or promotion. They have hissy fits if you request time off or have to leave early. There are random layoffs with no reason or warning, but yet will hire someone for a position a month later; even though they claimed the layoff was due to budget cuts. Very condescending upper management and the supervisors all have attitudes. No room for growth
