Pros

Alta Bates is one of the highest paying employers for travel RN contracts, but it comes at a price. Their cafeteria food is also pretty good and there are some really friendly people that do work there.

Cons

Started here as a traveler to try this hospital out, but could not wait to get out of there. I did not feel safe in my practice there and therefore did not renew my contract. From my observations and discussions with staff, there seems to be little career growth here and administration is not supportive. Many of their talented and long term staff have left due to shady administration tactics meant to drive out senior workers who are more expensive to employ. Outdated policies and workflows lack efficiency putting more strain on an already stressed out nurse. The reason why 60-80% of their nursing staff are temporary contractors is because no nurse wants to work here. The only people that do stay are the travel nurses who can tolerate the place for a fat paycheck. Here are some more things I want to share: 1) Outdated and broken equipment and scant selection of supplies for patient care 2) Outdated policies, repetitive charting, tasks and double checks that result in redundancy and lack of efficiency 3) They have lift equipment in each room. Expect to turn your patients by yourself. There is rarely any help. You might get help from another traveler if they are not struggling themselves on how to get through the shift. 3) 8 hours shifts for regular staff. I prefer my three 12 hr shifts (36 hours) in a week. Full-time staff work four 8 hour shifts which equals 32 hours which means less pay unless you want to work 5 days a week. 3) Expect to be floated once or twice in your shift. Not a fan of floating in the middle of my shift, but to do that TWICE is ridiculous. 4) Unhealthy work environment- No teamwork, collaboration or cohesion. Charge and remaining unit staff keep to themselves as employee turnover rate is very high here.

Pros

There are frequently positions open at Alta Bates and Alta Bates Summit Hospitals, but this is due to high staff turnover. The salary was very competitive.

Cons

I felt unsafe and unsupported working as an RN at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. The hospital was very poorly resourced, and my unit was often out of supplies, requiring nurses to horde even simple and necessary supplies like saline flushes. Management treated nurses poorly, it did not feel like a safe place to speak up and voice concerns about workplace conditions because I saw a fellow nurse get fired during her introductory probation period for giving honest feedback to our manager. The only time I heard feedback from our manager was to say we had done something wrong, never to provide encouragement or compliment our accomplishments and hard work. Because of the negative work environment, the nurses there seemed to operate in an every one for her/his self fashion, there was very little feedback and alot more back-stabbing than I've seen at other jobs.

ICU Staff Nurse

Pros

Having a job in unpredictable market.

Cons

The attitudes of the “lifers” as I call it are very poor as well as work ethic. High turn over rate in the ICU. The charge nurses are incredibly disappointing and unapproachable. God forbid you ask them one question in a 8 hour period, your bound to get attitude and an eye roll. The staff that’s been in ICU for a long time should have lessons etiquette and professionalism. There is ICU nurse that works there that curses every other word and screams all over the unit . She has been there 20 plus years but has never changed. Low budget for education. Little advancement in excelling as a nurse. The motto of old time employees I do what I want and as much as I want. And by the ways don’t bother me so I can sit on my duff the whole shift.
