Pros
Owners genuinely care about good, ethical local news. Most of the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Somewhat flexible about hours and a work-from-home/office split. Independence in finding and writing stories.
Cons
Frequent turnover amongst employees. The founders are still involved which sometimes led to competing instructions/expectations from them and the current publisher. Reporters are expected to not only work on their stories but also contribute to new products like podcasts, magazines, social media, investigations--expectations were always changing. If you want to experience seeing all sides of publishing and working in different media this could be a good place for you, but not if you just want to focus on writing high-quality stories. Pay is low for the number and abnormality of hours worked, but that is typical for all journalism.

Fun nice people, company outings and fun networking events
Cons
There was no trust given to employees which in turn caused no desire to succeed. Must be in desk by 8 am and not allowed to leave until 5 pm even when out in the field all day
