Pros

If you're willing to play ball by their rules, you too can get to add a meaningless "Director" or "Chief" to your job title in lieu of increased benefits or resources to support fulfilling your responsibilities.

Cons

I was not going to post a review but the recent spate of positive reviews led me to investigate. These reviews are not posted by technicians, associates, or researchers - they are posted by undergraduate co-op students doing one or two term work-study placements subsidized by their university. They, and grant subsidized postdocs, are the backbone of this company's workforce. They were asked to write a positive review in return for a positive letter of reference. The Vancouver Sun did a takedown of this company's spinoff published Aug 19th and Aug 25th, 2015 titled "B.C. company to launch DNA testing service: Scrutiny by government and College of Physicians and Surgeons being considered" and "BC gene sequencing laboratory retracts accreditation claim after news story exposes bogus info." This company not only bald facedly lied about having the accreditation required to offer their services, they weren't even smart enough to lie about the correct accreditation required to offer their services in British Columbia. Applied Biological Materials (abm) has repeatedly demonstrated a profound lack of business ethics, completely bankrupt scientific integrity, and laughable scientific credibility. They are repeatedly deceptive towards their customers and potential customers, their vendors, and their employees. Senior management considers performance to be a zero-sum game; no-one can win (especially senior management's favourites) if there aren't a lot of losers, and performs employee evaluations accordingly. Favouritism abounds and scapegoats are publicly verbally insulted. It's a crying shame that, not knowing any better, young people's careers are being ruined by blithely engaging in the terrible business and scientific practices encouraged by this company, much less the serious negative impact of researchers using this company's products potentially wasting uncompensable opportunity costs to trainees and researchers, time, potentially unique samples, grant money, and future grants when experimental results are non-replicable with bona fide reagents.

Cheap Company

Pros

abm is a highly variable environment, where some departments are well put together, where the manager looks out for the team and their best interests and working there can be rewarding and enjoyable (despite constant interference from upper management). Some promises of career opportunities are not empty, it IS possible to advance within the company, though your next job may not be what you thought it was. Lastly, abm employees tend to stick together and are very friendly and helpful to each other. I made very good friends there (most of whom no longer work for the company either).

Cons

The cons, sadly, far outweigh the pros, and most problems arise from upper management, and the lack of experienced middle management. Below are the main negative points: 1 - TERRIBLE upper management - The company is steered like a bumper car, with no regard for whether long term development directions are attainable with existing resources and talent. Some of the leadership are also a misanthropes who engage in insulting, inappropriate rhetoric, and nobody enjoys interacting directly with them. Each department is micromanaged to an insane degree, and gives department heads very little freedom to operate and make executive decisions. What's worse, they strike one as being completely dishonest and immoral, and casually engage in shady business practices. 2 - abm is a 'cheap' company. Salaries are extremely low, very far below industry standard, the bonus structure is a joke. The research facilities are basic and sub-standard, and investments in improvement are very poor. Even something basic like pipettes or centrifuges are old/beat-up or simply broken. The company often refuses to purchase much-needed equipment too. It tries to cut costs in terms of operations, so be prepared to i) wash dishes with cold water, ii) be banned from turning on AC except in the hottest summer months, iii) be dragged into department-wide meetings to discuss overuse of paper towels etc. 3 - VERY harsh HR policies. There is a draconic chokehold on vacation days, with the company assigning only the bare minimum. There is literally a person with a clipboard showing up around 9am to make sure nobody comes to work late. There were no paid sick days until recently, and even now, they are only eligible to be taken for contagious cases. The company tries to force employees to use up vacation days by regulating when to take unpaid leave. There is even a yearly maximum of UNPAID leave. 4 - Very high turnover - As a result of the first 3 points, the company has serious problems retaining talented employees. Because of the high turnover, everyone who is left has to work extra hard to pick up the slack. There is never enough help, the company refuses to hire more, and everyone has to do far more than their fair share. But when anyone complains, they are dismissed and told that 'it's just part of your job' and that you spending time putting out fires is not 'an excuse' for not doing your main job. As a result, your work WILL eventually suffer, and you will end up with very little job satisfaction.

Do Not Apply - Toxic CEO alert

Pros

Pros: Coworkers are great. They're your mental support in this company.

Cons

Everything you can possibly imagine. The company doesn't deal with biohazard waste properly. Genetic modified bacteria and cells are dumped into sinks and regular garbage bins without any treatment. It's a toxic working environment, because of the toxic CEO. You'll have to hear something offensive and insulting the very first day at work. You'll have to hear meaningless stories, mainly bragging about how good a leader he himself is and how stupid the former employees are. Yes, he badmouths former employees a lot, as if they're the reason why the company didn't grow. He blames on everyone lacking communication skills while he's the one who has NO communication skill AT ALL. If you decide to work for this company (think twice, please!), take my advices dealing with the CEO: 1. Do not ask any questions. Pretend you understand everything he says. 2. Do not give any suggestions to improve work. Smile, nod and say yes to everything he says. 3. Do not speak up for yourself. Again, smile, nod and say yes to everything he says, even though you know he's wrong. 4. When he gaslight you, be calm and don't take it personal. 5. Trust Glassdoor reviews and DO NOT apply at the first place. People give genuine reviews here to warn and protect you. Don't waste time in this company. They will let you go right before your probation ends, not based on your job performance but the CEO's personal preference
