Pros

"The Price is Right" TV Show is on during the day.

Cons

This place seems to get worse and worse every year. The facility, the morale, the pay, the environment, the management. It’s a small Mickey Mouse operation, that tries to be, and act like the big companies its surrounded by. The Parking is terrible, not enough for everyone. So if you get in anytime after 8am you better get ready to walk .25 mile to work. The street is full of other cars from the other companies and the parking lot is only good for about 30 vehicles. The rest is reserved for management, visitors and handicap. Not to mention that fact that they love to use up another 4 or so spots for pallets and equipment, that’s how much they consider their employees. This mind you, for a company with 100+ people. The Lunch room is disgusting and old. It's the worst when someone uses the bathroom and literally stinks up the whole lunchroom of bowel movement due to bad ventilation system. With only 5 tables and enough chairs for about 15 people, it seems like this lunch room was originally big enough for a company that only employed about 30- 60 people, which it did maybe, at some point in the early 80s. I guess they don’t encourage brakes, and prefer it's employers working. It's VERY badly kept and the two refrigerators they have are over packed with lunch bags, and very bad smells. I'm talking bags on top of bags, on top of bags. They are never cleaned, neither are the microwaves. So be prepared to leave your lunch in the car if you don’t want your bag to become smelly, or something to spill on it from people moving things around, and yes, A very BAD roach problem that has not been fixed in the years I have worked here. I just keep my food in the my car, in a cooler. You only get 30 minutes for lunch so if you're parked on the street and really far away, you better run to your car, eat fast, and run back, to be on time. I have seen it myself. Not much of a break in my book. If you like to eat out, better not drive, or you lose your spot…good luck finding another one. The building is very old and run down, just shows how cheap the company is, and how much they don’t care about up-keeps, and the employees. The morale is so bad. (People just work enough, not to get fired, and make the day go by faster.) The cleaning crew is very poorly mistreated and kept from talking to anyone and keep their eye on the floors and clean. Socializing is frowned upon, and though they will never admit it, the looks you get and the talks afterwards are later heard in meetings between the workers and the management. Because of this they simply don't care, because they feel unappreciated and underpaid, it is noticed in their work and cleaning. Other workers deal with the impossible task and demands, unrealistic deadlines from upper management. So they do the best they can not to get fired and deal with the day. Everything is done wrong and backwards. They love putting the cart before the horse, and expecting miracles in return. The sales group seems to be trained with fear of losing their jobs if they tell a customer "NO" or give them a realistic time line on how long it may take for production and delivery of their ordered product. It's always "YES we can have it for today" even if the company is completely out of it, and it may take 5 days to make plus delivery. Now, everyone is running around like chickens with their heads cut off and have been set on fire. This does not make anyone's day a good one at all. Unfortunately this happens all the time. The company might be growing, but not in the way you think. The only people that benefit from this "supposed" growth, is the family that owns the company, and perhaps some management sucking-up. If you are looking to come in to this company and work hard, and expect a "good job" to be said or promotions, or bonuses and fare equal treatment…Good Luck. Not going to happen. You will find yourself dealing with WAY to may upper and mid level managers and supervisor kissing the families rear ends to care about you enough to even mention your good work to them, because they are too busy taking the credit for the work YOU do. They say works like "My Team" or "I got my team to". They love saying that in the meetings. But Let's not forget that the minute you are not performing to the managers or supervisors expectations, you WILL hear about it. You can do a whole two week of amazing, great work, but for one small, tiny mistake or oversight, you will hear about it for an hour straight. "What about all the good things I did this week?" Ah, they don’t care. The Pay is not that great, and the yearly raises are a joke. 1-3% raise. The bonus is also a joke. They pay you enough to keep you coming back to work because you will need more money at the end of two week. (Ah..that paycheck to paycheck life style). Well, I will get a promotion, you say. Good luck with that too. There is nowhere to go in this company. Everyone is fighting to keep their positions and management won't give up theirs because they too can't rise up. When they do need a management position, they always seem to hire from outside. I have seen this many, many times. They seem to like to keep everyone in their position and never allowed upward mobility. It makes sense to do so, from a company point of view. Keep them from learning something new and moving up and they have no choice but to keep working, or just quit, which also happens a lot. They love to laterally move people or give more responsibilities to workers. Just don’t expect a raise. Sure, they will say, " We will take care of you, let's see if you can handle the work and we will talk about a raise come bonus time." Only problem is you will find yourself working more for 6-8 months and when time comes for that raise or bonus, you never will see it. This is well known within the employers. I myself have been a victim of this, and currently are doing several positions within the company with the same pay as when I had my fist position. Everyone there is over 45, and for many years are doing the same job. Now they are hiring a lot of cheap labor. Young teenagers to work in the company digital department. It's becoming very immature there, and the product is suffering because of it. But, the company wants to grow and save money, so they hire kids of the streets with no experience in zirconia production and pay them very little. So yea, its growing, but not in the right direction. Each year they have the worst, cheapest, Christmas party. In the same location and on the same day. (A Thursday) They serve the same food and the family goes on stage and congratulate themselves on being masters of the universe and how well of they are, while you eat the same salmon they had last year. I have noticed that less and less employees show up, other than the ones sucking up to the owners, and the new people that simply don't know any better. The management goes because they have to show their faces and have to show that they are part of the team. It's very rehearsed, fake and very boring, no one stays late and most people come for the free food and leave. Oh, and you are not allowed to even bring your spouse. Just you. So why would you stay? This IS a job for you if: You want to work for a company that will love to have you working for very little, If you don’t mind being demoralized and never told good job, if you want to look for a place to hang your hat, and have the same boring unfulfilling job for years to come. If you don’t like to personally grow, professionally be stumped, be micromanaged , if you want to work for a company that is understaffed in the places needed and over staffed in where it's NOT needed, and want to feel the frustration of being overworked and underpaid, If you want to deal on a daily bases with security which is a TOTAL joke. This is NOT the job for you if: You are ambitious, money driven, want to grow professionally and personally, gain valuable and useful knowledge, want to feel appreciated, love having great co-workers and people you can relate with. Getting paid well, want more than 1-3% yearly raises, while the company spend 100's of thousands of dollars on equipment, and Jaguars for the upper management, and then tell you it's not in the budget to give you a raise. Poor ventilation system, burning smells, and powder all over the company. If you like to work in state of the art buildings, and use clean bathrooms, plenty of parking, and a company that actually care about people and their workers. A company that treats you like a "team member", and not a "family member" as this one does, and only cares about the numbers and money. Cheap, Cheap, Cheap. Stay away from this company. This company sells dental products. Unfortunately most of its products are products that have been taken from other companies and re-sold, or copied and sold as the company brand. They take one product and sell it under multiple names. From the Alloys to the zirconia and Lab works. There is no Originality here, and honestly not growth for individuals that want to do something with their lives. This is a family business. Its design to give the family profits, not you. You will just work for them and simply get paid. And don't get me started on the horrible Medical Plan. If you have a family, it's going to cost you dearly. You will find yourself working long hours and become stressed if you can't motivate yourself to work for the amount of work and the amount of pay. They are the only ones reaping the benefits of the financial growth, and the companies infrastructure, though badly miss managed and old as it is. They always low ball everyone with the pay. I have seen people leave this place and fine better paying jobs for the same thing if not better. Everyone I talk to that have left, tell me best thing they did was leave this company. If you want to do the same thing over and over again with no sense of satisfaction, you might want to work at a bakery. At least you might get to see people enjoy your baked goods.

Pros

Not much positive come to my mind except a steady paycheck but that's only an issue if you are on the street. Oh, Wednesday's fruit basket was nice.

Cons

I was hired as a Web Technology Architect. My first meeting with the head of the company was kind of interesting. After a short introductory talk, he told me (when I was about to leave his office): "We are watching you!". It immediately reminded me on Meet the "you know what" but this time around, it wasn't funny. Argen is a family run business, they have many of their family and friends in the company. Either you are an insider (family/friends) or an outsider. The owners talk a lot about "Family Business" and they really mean it. It is their business, not yours. There are many people (at all levels) working for Argen for many many years and still do the same thing (no room for growth). If you join Argen and have a family, be prepared to fork up about $20,000 if you want PPO for your medical/dental/vision. They also offer 2 HMO plans, the lowest would still cost you more than $15,000 out of pocket. I have seen many employees who could not afford to have medical coverage. The worst thing is this: you can't join Obama Care because Argen offers health care plan and their plan meets the minimum requirements outlined in the law. When I told HR, for employees it would be better if the company did not offer any health care plans, she said: "We use the health care coverage as a recruiting tool and Argen gets tax benefits when the company offers a health care plan." None of the managers and IT people I talked to, were happy but they are stuck. They all complain about the poor working condition, low pay rate, high medical cost, zero respect for your professional opinion, unreasonable expectations. You see, the company was a small company for very long time and operated as such; it used to be a friendly place as most small companies are. They are now trying to act like a corporation when it comes to their expectations and policies but want to provide like a small company. As such, employees get shafted from both ends. It is a very loud place and no offices (except for a few). Employees are crammed in a small building (given the number of employees). They have a lot of loud machines and most of their people are on the phone most of the day (talking to customers). If your work requires concentration, well...good luck with that. When I asked to have at least a cubical in a bit quieter place, I was told "NO, I can't have it.". I replied "I can't concentrate and there is a reason companies like Microsoft give their employees an office or a quiet place", my manager quickly responded: "We are not Microsoft!!". And that was the end of the story. And regarding my job responsibilities: every job has some high points and some low ones that you do but you really don't like to do them. My manager (one of the company owners) practically took over all the high points of my jobs, leaving me with breadcrumbs because she wanted to get credit in her family for highly visible activities. For example, one of my job description was: "Select a vendor for project xxx" but she did that or "Host regular meetings with key stakeholders" but she practically ran all the meetings. You feed her with all the information you gather/know, she goes to the meetings, hosts and talks and talks. Once she said it all, she looks at you and asks you: "Anything else?", and of course you don't have anything else to add. That's a perfect way to outshine even the experts. Technically she wasn't qualified (by any means) to do any part of my job but she would do it anyways because she had authority. Also she started asking me to send the agenda for our meetings, write up meeting notes for every single meeting (including our daily scrum meetings, which defeats the purpose of scrum if you ask me). In my opinion, these tasks are typical PM tasks (and I told her that but she wouldn't care). Also she asks you to write it up in the next 30 min after the meeting, send her the draft, she would eventually approve it, and first then you can send it out. If it takes longer than 30 min because it was a 2 hours technical meeting, she would stop at your desk and tell you "you are late". If you are a professional and would like to work independently and don't like to be micro-managed, Argen might be the wrong place. Oh by the way, be prepared to have your one-on-ones in public. Everybody can listen to the conversation while they critique you and tell you, how you could do it better and faster and what you lack etc. And they expect and will tell you to "Go to WAR for Them. That's not a joke. And never mind about reasonable expectations. You tell them 3 weeks, they tell you 1 week regardless of the circumstances. One of the vendors we were dealing with experienced the same thing: he proposed X months evaluation and Y dollars for a project. The immediate answer was: X/3 and Y/5. He ran away and later told me: "Are we trading horses or what?" She chose a different vendor and actually ended up paying twice as much and taking more time. I guess that's what you get when you think you can bully everybody. And the most important thing: if you are an expert in your field and your opinion is different than the company owners', good luck with that, they dismiss it and you loose creditability. You better keep it to yourself. They won't like other people coming to their company and tell them other things. For example, they don't know (and don't want to know) that their ERP system is an outdated technology from 60's and early 70's. If you like to use Putty (an ugly and extremely cumbersome DOS based utility) to interact with the ERP databases, then Argen is for you. But if you like to work with modern database systems such as SQL Server or Oracle, Argen isn't for you. I bet you don't know their ERP but don't expect to get training either. I requested that several times and was denied every single time. Reason given to me: "It's expensive". The bottom line is this: 1) Don't go to Argen unless you are unemployed 2) Even if you go there, keep applying for other jobs 3) Don't have high expectations, you will get frustrated sooner rather than later 4) Have your spouse get medical coverage 5) Be prepared to be overworked/under-paid/under-appreciated 6) Have a clear exit strategy 7) Don't have an opinion, keep everything to yourself 8) Don't expect to have lunch breaks, they will schedule meetings during your lunch breaks on routine basis (without asking you), 9) Don't expect nice words when you have your one-on-one next to everybody. For example, expect to hear things like: "IT is the weakest link in the company". You can bet that everybody's antenna is way up when they hear comments like that. 10) Be prepared to be told (in form of a company wide email coming from the top) what kind of color you have to wear on Wednesdays, and get ready to be singled out if you don't follow that.

Middle Management Hell, Time Theft Heaven

Pros

Lots of opportunity to fill multiple roles. The company has been throwing itself into expending its product line and its capabilities, and somehow has been managing to stay afloat. The company has been hiring lots of new blood on the managerial and directorial level which is actively trying, though struggling, to bring them in line. HR has been actively working to improve quality of life at the company.

Cons

Virtual guarantee to be overextended The "somehow" is the problem here. The company does not make meaningful investments in its people, and when it feigns these investments, it doesn't make them in earnest, and they do not pay their employees competitive wages to the point that the company loses employees as fast as they gain them. Management has a fun habit of "correcting" timecards and encouraging employees to work off the clock, during lunch, or even from home on the weekends when they should be collecting overtime. When challenged on this, they will often either lie to their employees about the monetary benefits of retroactively giving up a sick day in order to coerce them to give up their entitlements or money they earned. While HR has admittedly done a better job in recent months to handle turnover via overall Quality of Life improvements, upper management is overly focused on achieving its strategic goals to the point of treating staff as expendable. While they trumpet internal promotions and lateral transfers, middle management expresses contempt bordering on malice when it comes to "other departments stealing our team members," to the point that on the corporate floor, middle management would rather pay out the nose to hire contractors and consultants instead of investing in training internal employees to properly handle the new demands. When they're challenged by their employees, regardless of the employee's experience or (in the case of the timecard modifications, the law), they As is typical of most long-standing establishments, many of the company's veterans are resistant to change, however there is little support shown from the operational directors who are overextended from picking up the slack of the upper management who got by and in on nepotism. Last but certainly not least, the company values are a complete joke. Integrity is the lowest priority among the company, and the less questions you ask, the better.
