I have been working at Arkansas DHS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of stability, flexibility if time off is needed, health benefits and POT accrual

    Cons

Not a lot of upward mobility unless you want to move to Little Rock or to another position or division where you are located, no raises, not even cost of living, unless approved by legislature for every employee to get one if they meet qualifications (just like any State job). You can work hard and get great quarterly reviews but see no monetary reward.

    Advice to Management

Allow those who could work from home, the chance to do so. You could definitely save some money on rental space which could mean raises more often for deserving employees.

    Pros

It offers stable employment and good benefits. If you have DHS on your resume, future employers will know you can put up with a lot of crap.

    Cons

Management can be horrible. You can not advance unless you want to stay there 20 years, then you will barely make more money anyway. Those that stay the longest is often because they are incompetent and can't find work elsewhere.

I worked at Arkansas DHS (More than a year)

    Pros

Many of the workers truly have hearts of gold. They work hard, show and require respect and truly love helping individuals and families. Getting to know those people is amazing and reminds you that there are still great people in the world. Being a help to the clients and meeting families carry great reward and leaves impressions that last. Overall serving the community holds so much weight and practically the only reason this place gets any stars at all.

    Cons

There are people in the organization who are "well-to-do" or consider themselves "educated" but lack emotional intelligence, common sense and have forgotten or are numb to the struggles that truly plague so many people. They look down upon their own clients and even co-workers. These are the people with the sour attitudes towards clients, co-workers and anyone else. They are the ones always cutting corners and plotting something against someone who is much more dedicated and hard-working than they are. They are the ones spreading lies but hiding and ignoring the truth just to dwell in the drama of it all. Most complaints spoken about this agency involved one of these types of people.

    Advice to Management

You didn't attend all of those years of school to be getting advice from me! That's for sure.

I worked at Arkansas DHS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None. Place was a hell hole. Bacon was decent, though.

    Cons

I worked for DYS inside DHS for 2 years. It was hell on earth. Ethical violations all over the place. You point them out, you become a target. I became so physically ill and anxious I would cry on my way in to work. Not worth it. Don't do it to yourself

    Advice to Management

    Less politics, more work.
