I worked at Arkansas DHS full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Sick leave, vacation leave, paid holidays

    Cons

Unsupportive management, you get promoted based on how well you are liked, backstabbing co-workers, rules not applied to everyone, hostile clientele, always short-staffed, large caseloads, unreasonable deadlines.

The office administrator was on a power trip. Supervisors were expected to work 6/7 days per week on salary and never permitted to take the extra hours worked as comp time. You are expected to make the workplace your life. Some of the supervisors there have been around for decades. They are negative and unsupportive, especially to newer supervisors. Gossip is a way of life there. Supervisors and the office administrator don't keep personnel actions confidential- everyone knows things that should be kept between the supervisor and employee. The office administrator clearly had an agenda against people she disliked. They were persecuted through write ups, extra workloads and removal from key projects. You are railroaded until you quit or get fired. If you quit, they can (and do) report you to personnel as "terminated". I never worked in such a negative environment until I worked here.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that people need a reasonable work/personal life balance. Practice keeping personnel actions confidential.

I have been working at Arkansas DHS full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I love working with and helping people. The work is never dull. You get to do different things and meet new people every day. Get to work with kids. Pay has gotten somewhat better.

    Cons

Supervisor is malicious and rude. There is no accountability to poor workers or supervisors. Productive employees are punished by receiving extra work when other workers fall behind. There is little opportunity for upward mobility. The agency does not promote from within. long hours with little recognition from supervisors (because they expect it), no support from supervisory staff

    Advice to Management

If you've been here for over thirty years, it's time to step down and left people with innovative and fresh ideas take over.
