Pros

Great coworkers in the field. All the field supervisors and the preceptors knew their stuff. Every paramedic I worked with was extremely knowledgable, friendly, and appreciated EMT-B's. I learned a lot. Salary was decent as far as EMS goes, especially in this area.

Cons

Way too many college students employed in the field who don't know what they are doing. Nepotism is strong here. A lot of people held higher level positions that shouldn't (and perhaps shouldn't have been hired in the first place). While the supervisors were great, the management made decisions every once in a while that made it appear as if they never set foot in a truck. They need a visionary like Bill Armstrong used to be, a person who has direction and specific goals for the company. Also, they need more 911 contracts because working IFTs day in and day out gets boring for more experienced employees. After two years I was looking for somewhere else.

Nepotism at Work

Pros

You'll get hands on experience as a new EMT/Medic. The workers doing the labor, (Medics and EMT's) are mostly good people. The occasional knuckle head, (most of the time) gets lost in the crowd.

Cons

If you aren't a part of the "clique", i.e. friends or family with the shift scheduler, H.R., dispatchers and/or management, then you are an expendable pee-on in their eyes. If you complain about the lack of proper supervisory structure/nepotism within the company, then you will be blacklisted. You will not be judged on the content of your character, or your patient care and related documentation skills. They value young, (cheap) and inexperienced EMT's and Medics, over more seasoned veterans. Management/current ownership would rather pay cheap hourly rates for its workers over safer, more skilled minds and bodies. It's shocking how the dispatchers get away with "picking" on certain people by giving them more undesirable calls, even when they aren't the closest available ambulance. Logic is not the driving force behind this company's operations, and hasn't been for quite some time. If you aren't friends/family with a "higher up" worker, you may want to go somewhere else to earn your stripes.

Pros

Lots of free training opportunities, flexible schedule, generally great co-workers, the folks in the administration are all friendly and easy to work with. Also, the company seems to be improving its training and care every day, it is a good place to work. This is a great place to get started as an EMT, and they are always hiring.

Cons

Very little emergency work outside of skilled nursing facilities.
