Abysmal HR leadership

Pros

Some great staff level individuals, however, this is about as much as I can say when it comes to pros.

Cons

As the previous review mentions, HR is invisible. I’m not surprised and I can certainly attest to this point. I’ll also add that HR leadership is by far the worst I have come across in all my years as a professional. It is most certainly very questionable as to how the leadership position was appointed. The fact that a HR presence in the US is nonexistent is beyond me, hence why this critical piece of the business is invisible, it’s tucked away in Oslo. Completely out of sync to how people live and work in the US with no understanding whatsoever of the human side of HR. There is no clear direction as to what is needed and certain member(s) of the leadership team seem to railroad their opinions without any courtesy. In all the careers I have had, this by far was my worst experience. It is very sad and such a shame as this can be a great place to work and thrive, however, certain individuals in leadership positions make it unbearable and impossible to even function as a free thinking human being with so much to give.

Pros

- The employees are awesome to work with - Free Snacks - Benefits are great

Cons

- Leadership not willing to change and some in the office are extremely egotistical and act like toddlers in the office. - Many will go rogue when they don't get their way on decisions - No direction in the company on our strategy - Hiring people without knowing what to do with them, scaling too fast - Promotions are political and done as an afterthought - HR was missing in Houston for quite a long time and it was absolutely needed way before we received it in the Houston office. - Some employees feel unnoticed and unappreciated - Work is unfulfilling and engineers are always last to know about changes - Basically was just a place for me to build my resume and coding skills - Most of our code was all over the place with no decision being made on using a consistent code in our architecture. - Constantly getting caught up in process rather than getting something out in an Agile manner

Typical startup issues with interesting potential

Pros

- great individual contributors and staff level employees - specific people in management who are exciting and bring unique perspectives - great benefits and office vibe - flexible working hours if you know how to set expectations - easily the highest-potential Houston startup

Cons

I believe that most of the issues pointed out in the other reviews are typical of a startup of this size, industry, and specifically for one that is out on an "island" in Houston away from other large employee pools. I think not being able to replace hires quickly due to lack of surrounding startup infrastructure is a root cause of many of the problems Arundo faces or is "known" for. Arundo is still very much in the phase of throwing things at the wall to see what sticks, which I personally think is ok. You can't figure out what works unless you experiment. - LEADERSHIP: My opinion on leadership is 2-fold. They usually mean well but a) are either great leaders who are spread way too thinly and can't focus their attention where needed or b) are poor leaders with a lack of software and startup know-how who cannot be replaced due to close ties with co-founders or again, lack of outside talent to attract to Houston to replace them. Also, we need someone at the helm of the ship who REALLY understands SaaS, technology, and innovation. Currently we have a CEO who is exciting, but doesn't have the software and SaaS know how to take this place to the next level. I think he can continue to lead but he needs the help of someone who can speak at the level of an advanced enterprise software company and knows how to make it successful, not one that is out shaking hands, trying to get funding, or getting people excited about the future potential of Arundo. Those days are gone, and we need to focus on tangible products and real-time results. - 2 HQ'S: Arundo is not doing themselves any favors by having two offices that are "equal" HQ's. The Oslo vs Houston tension is constantly brought up and tangible, and if we simply let one office take the lead so to speak, it would ruffle some feathers but also provide some centralization and focus.
