Pros

Talented and hardworking staff, free group lunch on Fridays, chance to travel to an international convention, early closings before holidays, ideal location in DuPont Circle, accessible to the metro, and passionate members

Cons

Let me be clear: All of these reviews are true. APS is a small organization, so it's not like bigger associations where one department is bad and everywhere else is good. The majority of the staff members are unhappy, unappreciated, overlooked, and fed up. There is one major problem with this organization and it is its leader. I have seen so many good people reprimanded for having a voice, a new idea, or a different viewpoint. The Executive Director rarely budges on her viewpoints. It is her way or the highway and this has caused a lot of good people to walk or get pushed out the door.

APS does indeed have a talented and hardworking staff, and it’s important that we be open to feedback and try to learn from it in order to attract and retain talented colleagues. Pros

Group lunch on Fridays. A lot of the people are really nice and hardworking.

Cons

This organization does not seem to care about employees or employee retention at all. They are in a real need for someone who is in HR to come here. If you have an issue then there is no one you can go to, they don't take employee feedback, and they are not open to change. The hours are very strict. If you want any flexibility then this is not the place for you. As for my department, it was really a mess because of poor leadership. The director was very much absent and left the office during stressful/busy times, did not answer emails, and provided zero training to new staff. If you are looking for somewhere that is open to change, creativity and somewhere to be collaborative then I would not recommend this organization. As a Manager I had no decision making power. The Executive Director here reviews EVERYTHING and her decision is the only one that matters.

Pros

Hard-working colleagues, good office location

Cons

Highest turnover rate of any company I have worked at, with employees desperately applying for another job, quitting or being fired within a year. Unprofessional and volatile environment.
