If you're reading this you're probably wondering how bad it could really be. I'm sure you've seen the multiple reviews that state that you should run away and don't apply to begin with.
I want to provide a look into what your daily and weekly life will be if you work in operations:
- Expect to work 60 hours a week, and definitely weekends. Most days you'll leave at 7pm at the earliest. The reason you'll have to work so much is because turnover is insane and we're incredibly short staffed. The "hypergrowth" paraded online does NOT apply to the U.S. and are inflated by foreign teams.
- Expect to figure things out on subject areas you know nothing about. Onboarding is non-existent. You WILL be thrown into projects, tasks and random side quests that aren't even related to your team. If you do not "self-serve" you are berated and treated like an outcast. No resources will be given to you- good luck.
- Expect to be told to do a task, complete it exactly the way you were told, and dragged through the coals because you didn't do it the way your managers wanted it. Be prepared to do a task multiple times, and yelled at every step of the way. Fun note; you WILL be thrown under the bus and anything positive you do will be taken as credit from your manager.
- Expect to be bullied, yelled at and gaslit. No, I'm not being dramatic. I and many other people at this company have been yelled at on a regular basis. You'll be bullied on slack in public channels and thrown into group chats with members in leadership that straight. up. bully. you. They will tell you to write a post mortem then proceed to not read it. The unprofessional behavior is insane- HR is NOT your friend.
- Expect to brown nose your way into promotions and raises. There is no other way. They do not care how long, hard or efficiently you work. If you are disliked they will fire you faster than if you are incompetent. I've seen multiple people fired or forced to quit because they spoke out against how things are run at this company.
- Expect to lose every semblance of work-life balance you currently have. Supervisors will text and call you at all hours of the day (even if its 11 or 12 at NIGHT). You are expected to answer immediately, and if there is a fire (there is always a fire) you must stop everything you're doing and work. If you're outside with your family or friends, expect to get a slack message telling you to do some random task that wasn't even your fault that you got looped into. If you can't get to a computer? Prepare to get berated for it online and when you come in on Monday- fun!
Everyone who is a half decent human being here is trying desperately to leave. It's truly a toxic environment where nepotism reigns supreme. Working late hours are romanticized and the "speed above all" mentality has done nothing but sped every single employee working here into an early grave.
If you need to take this job, do it- but don't stop looking for a new job. Working here for more than a year is nearly unheard of. The only people who work here for that long are individuals who are contributing to this toxic mess of a company. Honestly, the only way to survive here is to keep a low profile, apologize often and don't talk back.
I know the economic climate of our country is in shambles, but please know that no job should cause such mental, physical and emotional distress. This company preys on the desperate and I've seen so many people break down, burn out and get actual PHYSICAL health conditions from how hard they've worked. Its terrifying! If you do work here, you need to set internal boundaries for yourself so you don't end up the same way.
