Pros

-Good coworkers -Good amenities at the MAIN location

Cons

-Subpar pay -Only seems worth it to work here if you can get out of Insurance Operations (customer service). Mid level management are all busy trying to prove themselves. Meanwhile the entire department is a revolving door, turnover is insane. Morale is in the dumpster. You cannot make yourself irreplaceable to the department or you will never be promoted (“We really need you where you are right now.”), but if you don’t perform well enough you are micromanaged like crazy. They’ve begun hiring outside individuals into leadership roles who do not know anything about our company. Or promoting individuals from other departments into our leadership roles who don’t know how our department functions. Meanwhile our longtime workers who have put in time in effort are stuck and unable to advance their careers. If you can somehow sneak into another department maybe you’ll get better pay and a less toxic culture. But while you’re here you gotta keep your friends close and watch your back because the walls have ears and office politics are WILD. Not to mention how they moved the customer service departments to a new building with subpar amenities and didn’t even offer us a “sorry” or financial compensation for lost benefits (like a cafeteria, actual break rooms, etc.) and when you attempt to ask questions about this in all employee meetings (which you now have to attend via Microsoft Teams because they don’t want lowly customer service workers to be seen or heard from anymore in the main building) your questions are filtered through a moderator. If it’s not a softball question that exec would be happy to answer it’s not deemed worthy of a response. I’d go to HR (or Human Capital as they’ve so grossly changed the name to) but they are here to protect the interests of the C-Suite. NOT the workers who keep this place running.

Pros

- Nice, clean building. - Starbucks and cafeteria on-site. - Gym on-site - Jeans all week every week - Some people are very nice

Cons

- Micromanaging and narcissistic tendencies - weak IT leadership (IT Ops & EDM) - Drama queens and kings - Agile transformation is a joke and no support from the sr executives for this methodology. They can’t comprehend it and see it as a threat to their fiscal budgeting planning. - Poor project execution and a decent amount of the work gets pushed as a warranty items after due dates. In other words, projects never meet deadlines. - Very much a top down culture - Midlevel managers busy trying to prove their worth - Everyone is replaced - The company is a revolving door especially in IT. - Those who have been here for years show lots of ego and entitlement. - I’ve seen many people join and leave quick due to the toxic culture - Not open to new ideas. - Sr level executives seem very close minded. Their work from home policy was a joke. - if you can overlook all the above, then it’s a great place to be at 😁. Though, I’m planning my exit because things like that gets old fast.

Pros

The compensation is pretty strong, especially considering the company is not located in a high COL area. The actuarial exam program is also good and competitive with some of the other top insurance companies in the country, If you are looking to develop your actuarial career and pass some exams, this is not a bad place to be. The company also is rather well-known in the industry and can bolster your resume.

Cons

What better place to start than the top? Google the CEO of the company if you want to see the type of people that run the ship. It will also give a glimpse into the type of culture that can be pervasive at times, even with lower level employees. There is rampant gossip between employees, making everyone feel like they always have to tread carefully and watch what they do/say. The overall feeling is one of being watched, rather than the company giving the employees the freedom and space to do what they need to do. Coming from a previous company in which I was always offered the trust to get my job done, it was a stark contrast not feeling that with Athene. This type of distrust carries over to some of the company's policies as well. Working from home sparingly is frowned upon (even though the work can easily be done remotely), which is silly as it is rather common these days. Even while sick, the policy is either "come in to the office or take PTO". Working extra hours is expected during busy seasons. This includes weekends, but don't expect to be compensated for working these days. The company obviously takes advantage of salaried employees, making them work well more than 40 hours a week without any overtime. However, plenty of other companies find other ways to make this up to their employees, like getting compensation days to take off in other parts of the year for working weekends. This may help explain why the turnover within the actuarial department is extremely high. The company tries to make excuses for the turnover rate in their internal meetings, but to be honest it is not surprising to see. Concluding with management again, the "Peter Principle" is rampant with this company. There are many instances of people working their way up and having power over others who so clearly do not deserve it. The lower level employees are then expected to do all the work with little guidance since the higher level employees do not know how to help.
