Pros

Stable job, like most others in public service.

Cons

- Extremely political and toxic environment: people backstab each other just to climb higher. Your progression has nothing to do with your ability to do your job well, but has everything to do with whether you’re liked by a certain group of people. Management is biased and listens to select few, forming opinions of you not based on your work performance. Good for you if you’re in the right “camp” - Mentally draining: you can try your best and put in extra hours, but your RO will tell you you’re only meeting expectations. You can’t just focus on work, you have to deal with politics whether you like it or not. - Unequal work distribution: some people get loaded with plenty of work while others obviously do way less. No transparency in the way work is assigned. Management keeps telling you to do more to justify your promotion, but you will realize whatever you do will never be enough

Pros

- there's structure - meaningful work - I loved my team - more or less steady bonuses - there was an increasing emphasis on wellness and team bonding

Cons

- compared to other Gov bodies, the quantum for bonuses and increments is lower than average. Starting pay for fresh grads as well were on the lower end. - there's a lot of peak periods (for my team/division) and for parents, you can say goodbye to End-Year holidays with your kids because you'll be working and maybe doing OT. But again, depends on which team you're in. - Work volume was crazy and it kept increasing in complexity and volume each year while headcount stayed the same. - I was at the whim of the clients and some of their annoying practices or mistakes were not addressed and had to just suck it up and OT on our end. - expect office politics

Pros

Meaningful work esp if you enjoy criminal law Lots of liti exposure Autonomy over most cases Some great and very bright people Job security max Collegiate environment

Cons

Pay can’t compete with top end in private sector which is why the most promising will always leave or consider leaving Job security on the flip side means relatively more non-contributing people hanging about Unpredictable top-down directions and changes Middle management can’t do much at best and try to second guess what the ultimate bosses want at worst Workload in certain divisions untenable - might as well go private Bureaucratic Career progression depends very much on factors out of control like scholar, JLC, how much bosses like you
