Pros

*Employees have strong passion toward the mission *Friendly employees *Good reputation in the animal welfare community

Cons

*Animals are #1 and the employees are always #2, IF THAT *CEO has no people leadership skills, does not trust her leaders or employees and is difficult to communicate with *Favoritism runs ramptant *Not a family friendly employer. Very few, if any, employees have children. *Physical work environment is poor. Dirty offices, roaches, desk drawers won't open, etc; *Training and OnBoarding is non-existent *The CEO does not listen to her employees and does not allow for appropriate discipline to take place IF it's a close friend or a long time employee of APA! *Extremely high turnover - close to 30%. It's a revolving door with little to no action for change. *Lack of communicaton from executive leadership *Unreasonable job expectations/no work/life balance

Leadership Taints Great Job

Pros

Every person under leadership is trustworthy, reliable, and hardworking Most people do deeply care about the organization and the animals You really are changing lives and helping the community Opportunities for growth in certain departments

Cons

Leadership is horrible—and not just horrible leaders but horrible people. When I say leadership, I don't mean every single director and I don't mean managers. Specifically, I'm referring to those who oversee directors/are the top dogs in charge. They don't care about their employees—who they treat as disposable. They act like they know everything about everything and refuse to take advice from others. They refuse to acknowledge any issues outside the realm of sheltering and have asked that employees do not concern themselves with issues outside of sheltering. If you don't dedicate your entire life to the organization, they don't have a good opinion of you. If you address issues that you have with the organization, you are placing a target on your back. APA! leadership is ruining what should be an incredibly fulfilling experience by creating an increasingly toxic environment.

Inconsistent, Poor Leadership

Pros

Your work makes a real impact in saving lives.

Cons

Poor pay. Even tenured managers make in the $40k’s Terrible work life balance because animals will die if you don’t do your job, so the culture has become one where everyone is just always expected to get things done to save lives. Turnover is a serious problem so you are constantly having to train and figure out how to work with new people in the same role.
