Pros

The only benefit in working at Axos Bank (formerly Bank of Internet) is the opportunity to gain experience working in a dysfunctional environment.

Cons

I heard it was a less than ideal place to work before I started my employment here. I couldn’t believe it could be as bad as I heard. It was. (1) The meritocracy culture that Axos Bank encourages results in a selfish, conniving, idea-stealing, finger-pointing, fear-based environment. (2) The executive team fails to see the value and dedication employees bring, and instead of rewarding them they let their top performers go in fear of others looking bad. There are some occasions where the company went so low as to fire some employees right before their bonus stocks fully invest. Shame on you, management. (3) There is no work-life balance. In fact, the workload and unrealistic deadlines demand weekends and evenings to get your job done. Unless you are part of a team that doesn’t put their time in. If that is the case, those low-performance employees get to come in late and leave early without consequence. (4) There is no meaningful appreciation or recognition. After a major launch to consolidate their brands, the company hosted the most mediocre lunch event you can imagine. An outdoor event where you waited close to an hour on line to receive half a sandwich and a choice of soup or salad. And, in a pathetic effort to recognize the hard work and dedication employees put forth for the successful launch, you have an arrogant, self-indulged CEO on a balcony looking down at his employees (figurative and literally speaking) as he struggles poorly through papers acknowledging the few names on the list he was able to pronounce leaving the others unrecognized with the messy stack in his hand.

Growth Over People (At Their Own Risk)

Pros

Tech-focused, legitimately innovative, and--from what I could tell--a stable of talented staff, many of whom desire professional growth and the chance to create a better product and company.

Cons

Let's start at the top: the executive leadership is a teeming mass of testosterone-drunk Good Ol' Boys straight out of a Federalist Society, hyper-capitalist, Ayn Rand fever dream--several conference rooms at HQ in San Diego are named for Barry Goldwater (enjoy, employees of color!), Ronald Reagan, Winston Churchill, and the aforementioned "Atlas Shrugged" author. Only two women currently occupy the C-suite (both White), and that's only due to a recent promotion of the head of HR to EVP. CEO Greg Garrabrants, though genuinely smart and affable, is a future failed GOP congressional candidate straight out of Central Casting, and makes little to no effort in hiding it. The individual Business Units attempt (usually through middle management) to prop up the charade of collaboration, but ultimately make very little secret of how much they can't stand each other, particularly between the Compliance/Audit and Production groups. You'll hear a lot about "self-governance" and "making an impact" when in fact the expectation is excessive work hours for below-market pay (unless, of course, you have managed to work your way to (a) VP or higher, and (b) your Executive's good graces--then your pay is exorbitantly, comically outsized compared to your peers), and little chance of real career growth. The culture is cutthroat, and the incentives paltry. Management reflexively pushes the semi-annual (discretionary) bonuses of 50% cash and 50% restricted stock unit awards, but turnover is so pervasive that the three-year vesting schedule often renders the incentive meaningless.

Pros

absolutely nothing. It was hell working there.

Cons

extremely toxic culture (back stabbing, gossiping, blame games), inept employees and managers, horrible pay, terrible upper management. Their high turnover rate is the proof of what a terrible company this is. Including my manager and even her manager hated their jobs. I must also add they were terrible managers themselves, it was all about their political savvy at the company. This company is so unprofessional that I had to call them multiple times for them to verify my employment there when my prospective employer was running a background check on me. I also had to spend countless hours with them to get paid the money they owed me. I am so fed up with their BS, next time they do something like this, I am going to file a former complaint about them

Axos Bank Response

We’re grateful you took the time to share your feedback, but we’re sorry that your impressions of working here are so far removed from the culture and values that Axos is built on. We encourage team members to be emotionally involved in their work and to have a positive mental attitude. We define character as one of our core values, and see trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, and caring as the five pillars upon which character rests. And while we champion superior individual performance, we also recognize that our success rests on teamwork. Finally, the culture in our Marketing team has changed dramatically over the last 2 years following a reorganization and management change. This has resulted in stronger collaboration, better communication, and greater opportunities for career advancement. It’s clear that your perception is different, and we hope you find a better fit.
