Pros

- Coveted pension plan and overall benefits package - Corporate headquarters located in a gorgeous, LEED Gold building in Victoria - Support provided to promote healthy living

Cons

- New CEO selected from within the organization, reinforcing existing patterns of thought and action instead of the shake up it so badly needs - No unifying vision for the organization or strategic direction—Ferries is rudderless and at the mercy of senior leaders with competing agendas - Bickering and in-fighting among the VPs and C-suite - Questionable ethics with respect to procurement, including close ties between senior leaders and specific consulting firms - An old boys’ club mentality born of privilege and deeply-rooted Navy culture - Far-reaching misogyny expressed daily; if you’re a woman, expect to work harder and longer than your male colleagues but with no pay-off. - IT and business owners on projects are often at odds and there is no fortitude, aptitude or practical mechanisms to address governance problems - Failures are not considered part and parcel of a culture of innovation; Ferries runs on fear and any failure requires a scape-goat - Workplace bullying is largely tolerated; HR and leadership will mouth the right platitudes but no action will be taken to create a safe, supportive environment where all can flourish - Ferry rides are a taxable benefit and not free as they once were

Pros

Huge emphasis on safety to the point of 'no one moves, no one gets hurt'. New employees generally come in and really want to contribute. Quite often the public is lovely. They're on their vacation or off for the weekend and they're happy and having fun. Visitors from out of province love the experience of going on a ferry. I worked as both a terminal attendant and a deckhand so there was a fair bit of variety. You don't have to sit in a cubicle. The company is quite happy to train employees in other areas of operations although there's generally no crossing over to other departments (ie - if you're at a terminal, you stay at that terminal)

Cons

Toxic work environment. Massive amount of 'c.y.a'. You're being watched by the so-called management all the time. Any little discretion is noted and you're called on it. The entire organization is handicapped by the amount of administration. Employees are afraid to do anything for fear of being picked at by their supervisors. The rules and supervisors change constantly so that on Wednesday you have to follow the rules of Supervisor A and on Thursday you're doing it all wrong because you now have to follow the rules of Supervisor B. Horrific work/life balance. Being on-call is ridiculous. The expectation is that they can call you anytime and you're supposed to drop everything and race to work. They see no problem with calling you at 5:45 in the morning and expecting you to race to work for 6 a.m. You will actually get reprimanded if you don't do this for them. Management at the lower levels is a joke. (I can't speak for the upper levels) Insecure personalities with little or no true management experience who are jockeying for position and trying to make themselves look good at the expense of others. Little to no actual teamwork.

Pros

Honestly, I would struggle to quantify a positive at BC Ferries. I gave my notice after 7 years, took a massive salary reduction but my happiness sky rocketed. In my books this was a good return. In the end I found happiness and had a life. The money found me eventually. It was a great life lesson. Don't settle, don't be lured by perceptions of good pay and job security. Challenge yourself and move on. Don't sell yourself out. You'll regret it.

Cons

Monkey uniforms, management, communication, structure, HR is a joke. Most people have very little goals in life and hate to hear about anybody plans to do more with their life. Theft is a regular occurrence. Supervisors have communication skills of a cave man.
