Pros

If you're lucky enough to work with a good manager (there's a few) you will have reasonable workload and deadlines. Christmas staff Party, which was usually held in tiny office canteen, was recently upgraded to a dinner in a local kebab shop. Nice food although you'll be asked to sign an embarrassing form saying you promise to not consume too much alcohol.

Cons

They sell themselves as "friendly, family-owned business" - don't be fooled. They will squeeze everything out of you and give little in return. Brace yourself if you work directly with the owner, he will pop round and demand you to finish a 3 days' job in 5 hours. Not that you can let your employee know in advance. Beware if you speak foreign languages - you will be asked to translate loads of stuff (saves ££££ for the company) and won't get even a £50 bonus. Salary below industry avg. Xmas bonus is a joke. Building we work in is in terrible condition - ceiling falls down whenever it rains so you will find a few tiles missing here and there. We had a pigeon flying over our desks the other day!!! No music (don't dare asking), no flexi hours, no working from home, no social. There's no HR - everything goes directly to the CEO. Expect your requests/suggestions to be replied in a passive-aggressive way and ultimately ignored. They are too stingy to buy paper kitchen towel for the canteen and get us toilet roll instead. Brilliant idea!!! Last but not least, horribly handled redundancy process. We were told last minute although they had known they wouldn't be getting the lease renewed for ages. The owners of a "friendly" business not present during any staff meetings!! We were not even asked if wanted to have individual consultations. Company kept delaying meetings with our representatives and wouldn't release the minutes for days afterwards. People who have been working for them for just under 2 years (which is a minimum for statutory pay) are not getting a single penny. They put in minimum effort to just abide by the law. We knew the company was far from perfect anyway but that's just a real disgrace.

Pros

Colleagues (and some managers) are friendly and down to earth. The building closes at 5:45, which is good for work/life balance.

Cons

For any future employee I think what you most need to be warned about is the 'leading on' of employees on pay and promotional movement within this company. Many have been put on these 'trial periods' with no change in title or pay for months and months on end with an increased workload to the point that many have left. It is so demotivating both for the worker and also for the people working with them. They claim to have a 'one rule applies to everyone' policy despite the fact that we house warehouse, customer service and office workers in the same building, who will all have different needs and working environments. Everything goes through upper management, in the most minute detail, meaning middle management seem to have very little say. What that means is if you are in a junior position and have several levels of management between you- any request will have to go up that chain with no opportunity to speak to anyone above your immediate manager- meaning your request more often than not gets ignored. The company claims to care but does so in ways that do not LISTEN to what employees actually want or need, merely dictates a very inflexible and old fashioned model. The company meets the barest of minimums when it comes to legal requirements. Yes they are meeting them, but truly by the skin of their teeth. This has been reflected in their redundancy process which has been handled shockingly. It is no excuse to say that they have not gone through it before, or that 'they are finding it stressful too' - employees have come out of that process worse off because of how badly the redundancy was handled and the continued inflexibility and lack of transparency from management.

Pros

High respect for Directors @ Managers (some). Anybody who works for Baker Ross for a number of years only stay's because they are good at their jobs and are team player. Plus lovely and friendly team to work alongside.

Cons

A member of (management) staff is lazy who passes work onto other members in their dept to give them time to eavesdrop on conversations and circulate around their dept. Listens on phone conversations. Read peoples email and circulate ie gossip. Due to their insecurities and jealousy they bullies and intimidate staff they doesn't like to force them out. Very convincing liar.
