Pros
Medical Benefits. Time off if you can get it.
Cons
Too much to list here. Toxic work environment, surrounded by incompetent, inept, poorly trained and uneducated staff and employees. City and department will pressure you for stats and "performance" and then will punish you for doing your job and will not support you when the need arises to use your police powers, which is daily. You will get injured on the job wrestling some criminal or worse, and your city and the department will actually fight AGAINST you to try to deny providing medical treatment or workers comp. Daily issues with payroll system glitches and interface not working - holiday and time off being lost and miscalculated, pay being shorted or completely incorrect. And while everything is in total chaos your'e expected to not complain and just accept that's the way it is and come to work and ignore it. Poor souls in patrol division cannot get a day off because of short staffing and poor management. I worked in a detective division for over 14 years and even that role was daily misery. The internal chaos and disorganization, lack of support, weak and inexperienced states attorneys office combined with the gritty streets of baltimore was too much hassle for the pay. It just goes on and on. Every day.
