Pros

Starting salaries for professionals (I.e. engineers & management) is relatively competitive if you want to avoid driving to St. Louis. However, raises are typically 2-3% (in the best of times), so don't expect much growth.

Cons

This is 3rd generation ownership that rules by arrogance, fear and intimidation. The culture is in-bred & extremely toxic and will never change unless the company is purchased & executive management is removed. It is not uncommon for the COO to belittle and yell obscenities during meetings. Manufacturing processes are old-school batch & queue and vertically integrated. No interest in lean/six sigma or any continuous improvement methodology. It's hard to believe that such a relatively small company can have such a lack of synergy.

Poor leadership from the top

Pros

A lot of local experience people with a committed passion for their jobs. Family owned with one family member having the passion to keep it going.

Cons

Leadership by fear doesn't work anymore. It's an embarrassment to the employees, family and organization when this is your way to motivate employees.

Unacceptable work environment

Pros

Many of the general employees and some managers are worth working with and make the day enjoyable.

Cons

The management runs the company with fear. Working hard and going above and beyond get passed by because "you are just doing your job". Every little mistake is blown out of proportion and the person will be made into an example by termination. Yearly goals are just additional work given to the employee on top of normal work. If goals are met, there might be a small raise. Goals are black and white. You miss a large goal by a small amount, the whole goal will be discredited as if it was never attempted. Managers often look for reasons to discredit goals and as such, limit the amount of a small raise that can be achieved. If executive management does not like you, even if they are not over your department, they will find a way to make employment difficult. The various departments do not work together well and when something goes wrong, everyone starts to point fingers just to protect themselves. Engineering is held at arms length and only works on what others tell them too with little ability to expand. Environment is toxic. Employees that have come into the company excited and ready to make a change is often beaten down until they comply with everything just to keep their job. Only way to move up in the company is by gaining social favor with management. Executive management often plays favoritism with other employees. These employees can get away with anything while others struggle. Any socialization past "hello how are you" is strongly discouraged. Benefits include mediocre health insurance, 401k, vacation time, and tuition reimbursement.
