Pros

Networking with other talented coworkers.

Cons

The writing is on the wall after many senior department meetings that have been happening over the past couple of months. Someone is leaking info from behind closed doors and they are planning additional layoffs, outsourcing even more work and focusing more on brick and mortar stores. The senior leadership doesn’t even know what kind of work the third party companies are working on. Teams don’t communicate and throw each other under the bus. A lot of talk about trusting team members but that’s obviously not the case after hearing about these meetings and additional corporate plans. Someone who is a higher up VP is really playing both sides currently and his team is not happy. Culture is absolutely awful and it’s clear that HR doesn’t care either, especially after hearing certain team members received 3.5% raises this year while others only received 1-2%. It’s bad.

Pros

Making a lot of networking opportunities with people who have already left

Cons

Massive Layoffs after telling us that 2023 sales were on a good track. Trying to save their bottom line that they wasted away on higher-ups who have no experience. Promotions are negotiated with managers only to have HR say the employee is making too much money already and they can’t promote them any further. When certain people do get promotions, their salary increase doesn’t change and they don’t qualify for bonuses anymore. They expect the lower level employees to take the blame for mid-manager and senior manager faults. Execs don’t trust the people they personally hire. When layoffs happened, managers called in sick so they wouldn’t have to answer to their direct reports. Lies about sales. Going with an all-agency model moving forward and eliminating more positions along the way. The most toxic environment I’ve seen in 20+ years.

A ton of potential, culture holds the entire business back

Pros

Company has been a leader in the retail battery, lighting, and device repair industry for years. Some category and product managers show great promise and understanding of day to day operations in stores. Store data is becoming more and more available and useful and leadership is comfortable using that data to drive business areas. So much potential in the business model.

Cons

The corporate office especially suffers from nepotism: the favorite people are favorites from the beginning and receive preferred treatment. Little to no advancement unless you are buddies with someone in a director position. Very little career planning or guidance. When something is wrong, no one takes ownership and fixes things, which makes the discussion an excuse fest. When you do try to take ownership for a problem, you are all alone. Very few category and product managers understand what it's like to be in a store. POS, product support, ARO, order management etc. are subject to a lot of turnover because of tough expectations. Everyone in the office has the luxury of being very far removed from customers and sometimes do not realize the severity of their decisions.
