Pros

The only positive was the people, some amazing people have worked there.

I can't even scratch the surface of the stress and emotional damage done by working here. Treatment by senior company management is abysmal. This has included condescension, gossiping, belittling, gaslighting, being sworn at, being severely underpaid and overworked. I know for a fact that this isn't just the experience I had because I continue to be contacted by former and current employees, sharing the same stories. More recently, I have been contacted by team members about experiences of being bullied by upper management, which is devastating but ultimately not surprising. They utterly squeeze every last drop out of their employees and then provide with nothing in return. Staff have become physically poorly and been involved in accidents as a result of the stress they have experienced at work. Leaving has been the most cathartic experience but I am still carrying so much of the trauma, anxiety and the lack of self-esteem that working here has caused me. This is a shared experience by so many long-term former staff members. I was also severely underpaid for the level of work that I undertook. It's taken me leaving to realise that though. I cannot stress enough how much damage has been done to some of the most amazing people I have ever known and worked with.

Pros

They do make some nice tasting teas Met some good friends whilst working there

Whilst working at Bird and Blend I twice worked 9 hour shifts where I was so extremely busy and rushed off my feet that I wasn’t able to take a break for the entire day. I didn’t get a tea or lunch break, nor 5 minutes to go to the loo. On one of these occasions I was also on my period and by the end of the day had bled through my pad and onto my jeans. If this sounds extreme and you’re thinking “that can’t be possible, how can anyone not have 5 minutes to go to the loo in a 9 hour shift” then you don’t know what it’s like to work at Bird and Blend. Worst still was the culture of toxic positivity at Bird and Blend. If you ever expressed anything other than orgasmic levels of enthusiasm about the teas or the business management then you were sidelined as a negative person and excluded, gossiped about, shamed and shouted at. Those same upper management staff members who would visit the stores and tell you how “fabulous it looks!” with big smiles would then turn around and talk crap about those same things they had complimented 30 minutes later to someone else. They culture cannot and will not change when the people at the top are setting this example. Hard work is not rewarded, there is no rewards programme whatsoever, the only incentive to work harder is so you won’t get shamed, gossiped about or told off. You also cannot trust the positive reviews on here as I have been in meetings where current staff members have been told to go online that day and write a 5 star review to try and combat the bad reviews. Only apply if you too are a toxic person and enjoy being worked into the ground.

Pros

Emotionally and Physically draining Unsupportive upper management Rumours and gossiping Gaslighting Senior management Bullying Unrealistic Targets - not achievable, all based against high earning stores. My experience with Bird and Blend destroyed every shred of self worth I had, my confidence hit rock bottom, my emotional well-being beyond damaged - it has taken me over a year to be able to write this and it still brings all of these emotions flooding back to me. Yes men/women/people only! If you dare to step out of line or ask questions make sure you are prepared for the backlash! After some questionable experiences and quite frankly appalling treatment I submitted a formal grievance. Upper management ‘investigated’ but the entire thing was a complete farce….investigated by them, the same team and people my grievance was towards, I wonder if you can guess what the outcome was? Their answer to bullying from upper management was that ‘everyone deserves a chance to make mistakes’ - I can see from other posts on here there has been rather a lot of “mistakes” made. How a company can claim to be so ‘people driven’ and talk so much about caring for their staff and then treat SO many this appallingly is astounding to me. In surrounding months to my resigning 7 other store managers/trainee manager (some of the best people I have met!) also left their positions also! I poured absolutely everything I had into my store, i had built a really safe space for my team and the community, garnered a loyal following and had so many incredible regulars. In my last couple of months, I noticed the difference of corporate influence trickling down, it becoming less and less about the people and more and more about money and targets. It’s a business, I understand that, but if you want a bespoke service that gives every customer an incredible experience then you cannot push through enough transactions a day to meet these unrealistic monetary goals.

Thanks for your review and sorry that you feel this way. I definitely agree with you that we have some amazing teams and that we don't always get everything right - although I do think we've made huge progress here over the last few years. That said, (and whilst it wouldn't be appropriate to discuss individual examples), it wouldn't be in line with the way that we handle grievances for somebody to investigate themselves. I was alarmed by this suggestion so have looked into this and can't see that occurring so it would be great if you could send over some more details for me to investigate? Hope all is well your end.
