Pros

There are lots of good people on the 'shop floor' working hard and trying to do their best. Offices are pleasant - especially Chelmsford where they have a fantastic canteen. I had a well prepared plan upon starting employment which detailed my role and the plan for the first 90 days. This was well thought-out and valuable as I acclimatised to my new job. Some roles are flexible - to the extent where some team members leave just after lunch even when they are 'in' for their day or two a week. Nice work if you can get it. Some of the IT apprentices have been able to progress and learn skills as they are developed into more experienced roles, but my understanding is that their salaries do not usually reflect their new skill or worth. It might be an OK place to work if you are a fee earner?

Cons

I have never worked in a department where morale was so poor or where staff turnover was so severe. Many of those who haven't already left are desperate to leave, sick of being overworked and underappreciated in a culture of interference and obstruction. IT leadership seemingly pretend that this is normal, that it isn't their fault, and that nothing is wrong. I do not know how the senior IT managers (or their bosses) could possibly think that they are doing an acceptable job. I would be ashamed if I were in their position(s). Compensation and benefits are very poor compared to similar roles in IT in the local area. Outside of IT, my impression was that all business services departments seemed stretched, overworked and underappreciated. I am unsure of the utility of the HR department, as they are aware of these cons from multiple sources yet I saw no sign of action from them in response. If you are considering a role in IT at Birketts and have any other option - take the other option. Avoid at all costs unless truly desperate.

Pros

There is a fairly good work / life balance and pay is acceptable but not fantastic. Summer party is excellent. Jonathan Agar is a very pleasant guy.

Cons

Your experience at Birketts will depend a huge amount on which team you are in. Plenty of teams have fantastic, friendly and supportive partners and there are some genuinely wonderful people and decent lawyers in the firm. Sadly I'm not in one of those teams. The juniors in my team are micromanaged to near death and are amongst the least content lawyers I have worked with in my career. The partners are abrasive, do not support their staff when any difficulties arise and are frankly terrible managers. As a result, turnover is very high. Any attempts to try anything new or innovative are quickly squashed. It is a genuine shame as staff in other parts of the business seem much happier.

Pros

The offices are nice and the pension provision is good.

Cons

• there is little respect for anyone who isn’t a Partner. • there are no career development prospects. They make it very hard to progress and they don’t offer any support. If you do want to progress, you have to do it at your own expense and they don’t give you the work in order for you to gain experience. • the salary is abysmal. They often employ regional staff to do the work for the London office so they don’t have to pay London wages. The salary is below the average. • Too many good staff members are being stretched whilst deadwood is allowed to do very little and nothing is said. • a deep rooted problem within at Partner level of bullying and gaslighting.
