Mentally & Emotionally Toxic

Pros

Good benefits, work/life and pay.

Cons

You know when people say their boss is "crazy" but you brush it off because everyone thinks their boss is crazy? This is not that instance. Things I have seen Kathleen (the CEO) do: - Sob as she shares deeply personal information during company-wide meetings - Smash her laptop against the wall because another firm implemented a humanitarian aid campaign before she was able to -Talk poorly about current and former employees behind their back with other current employees of the same position or below (her comments have been related to work and personal dislike) - Shame employees for planning a vacation months ago and ask them to change it because it interferes with the plans she just made - Yell at employees - Promote employees, even though all of their managers thought they were not ready because she related to them personally - ....There really is so much more but I think you get the idea Bottom line, the CEO is toxic for the environment and really hard to work with. Even when she likes you, working with her is exhausting as she has a tendency to jump in and demand things are done her way, even if she has no context and it's not what the client wants.

Boca Communications Response

Thank you for your review and I'm sorry to hear that you are not happy with my leadership at BOCA. I want you to know that I've heard your concerns and am taking them to heart. If you've worked here long enough, I think you know how passionate I am about BOCA and how much I care for the employees here. I've worked hard to make this agency a success and I know that I couldn't have done it without all of you. I'll admit that I am an emotional person and I wear my heart on my sleeve - too much so. I apologize if that makes you uncomfortable. I am committed to creating a work environment that is professional, fun, and place where people want to work and grow in their careers. This includes recently creating an Operations department with a new General Manager and HR Director who are helping us to grow into the agency we want to be. If you continue to have concerns about working at BOCA, please know that you can speak with them or come to me directly. Thank you again for your feedback. -Kathleen

Best Agency I've Worked For

Pros

I've worked at a few agencies and have never had this combination of work/life balance, flexibility and senior staff who genuinely care about you. BOCA will pay you well, work with you so that you have time to live your life and genuinely listen to you if you have concerns. No job is perfect, but this is the best job I have had and would highly recommend it to someone burnt out at another agency or is looking to work somewhere with talented people who also know you have a life outside of the agency. Also the benefits are excellent. They pay for most of your healthcoverage!

Cons

BOCA is a startup in transition - a new office is about to open up in Union Square, some of the long-term employees have moved on (largely to jobs in-house or not at another agency) so things, like most agencies, are in flux The CEO is emotional, which can be good or bad. She is genuinely sad to see people go, or to see people upset. She is the kind of CEO who wears her heart on her sleeve and takes a personal and emotional interest in the company she has built and the people who work for her. For some people they love this, for others - she is too much. Almost a perfect 5star in my book- dings for Career Opportunites (small agency so there are opportunities but there is inherently less room for error and only so many senior positions) and Senior Management (CEO is either someone you work great with or someone who will make you uncomfortable, also the former HR person wasn't great but the new one has been fantastic so far.)

Pros

This company provides an amazing work-life balance. Every Friday is work from home. They really try to provide the materials and support that you need to grow. We have an amazing group of leaders that are always willing and able to listen, but also will take action to ensure you feel appreciated. I like the feeling of a flat organization where VPs are ready to pitch and contribute where ever needs assistance.

Cons

Things are a pretty ad hoc. Things can be better planned out here and there but overall, are manageable.
