Pros

Tech team really approachable and a good bunch A lot of talented and passionated staff. Talent acquisition have done a good job finding these people. (Shame management team don't allow it to be brought to use)

Cons

Toxic CEO and very poor management culture. Tell the CEO what he wants to hear (that you can make him a lot of money) and he'll change the company direction pretty much overnight. Engage in debate, flag challenges / concerns and you fast become blacklisted. Very little startup experience in C-Suite team. Nice people individual but they're mostly from corporate backgrounds. This lack of understanding / appreciation of the journey in an early stage startup is really problematic. Edtech video market is highly competitive and Boclips have no USP. Amassing videos which are mostly freely available on YouTube and trying to package it into a paid for product isn't in the spirit of the edtech movement. Ethical questions on the sales approach with messaging focusing heavily on schools infringing copyrights and being at risk of lawsuits - this is completely fabricated. Almost all the video providers to Boclips have an educational fair usage policy allowing teachers to use their content in classrooms for free. CEO talks very badly about former employees if they leave the company at every opportunity.

Pros

Some tech people were approachable and passionate. Pay is average for the market, good benefits package for a start-up, 30 days of annual leave. Be aware, the positive Glassdoor reviews are coming from current employees...read reviews of former employees!

Cons

Toxic work environment, blame culture, lack of transparency, lots of gossip, and (often untrue) rumors being spread by top management. The bad work culture comes straight from the toxic CEO who only wants to hear how to quickly make money, he often changes the entire firm's direction in order to gain quick money without any consideration for long-term growth and strategy. Management does not like speaking about issues and problems in a proactive manner, they prefer to pretend obstacles do not exist or they try to get rid of you instead of trying to solve them. When the actual problem occurs they blame lower-level managers. HR is unqualified and does not support employees when needed. They do not align their actions with people's managers. Employees who earlier had connections to the CEO and/or HR are being praised and promoted (CEO's friends, friend's kid, etc.) The company lacks USP and value proposition, the technology used focuses on manual support, and it is not scalable. The video content offered is not unique, often available for free elsewhere. The company seems to focus on the quantity rather than the quality of products and services. It is a very sales-led organization where promises that are not in line with the current offerings are made in order to make quick money, this results in unrealistic expectations and a lot of pressure on the technology team. Hence, the ethics of the sales teams seem very questionable to me. Some engineering individuals constantly try to dictate what should be worked on next, telling the product what to do but not sharing the responsibility in case the plan does not work out - this behavior is sadly backed by the CEO and HR. Upper-level management can't be questioned if one wants to say on good terms with them, they seem confident to be always right and refuse to collaborate with other employees that are often specialists in a given space. CEO and HR talk very badly about former employees, spreading untrue information and false reasons for their leaving.

Pros

A lot of genuinely committed and interested people in doing a good job.

Cons

The CEO's managerial skills are not the best and company direction depends on who's in favor that is whispering on his ear at the time.
