How low can it go?

Pros

Breakfast and lunch are available in a nice cafeteria. The Company subsidizes the cost. Nice location. Most employees are extremely nice.

Cons

The Company no longer values it's employees. They just got rid of our IT and brought in a 3rd party to handle. There have been quite a few firings for frivolous reasons to long standing employees. Threatening to fire employees that have been here over 20 years. Really just horrible behavior on the part of some Management and HR. Myself and QUITE a lot more employees are actively looking for employment elsewhere.

Pros

Good health insurance and paid time off. Subsidized cafeteria.

Cons

Very low morale, lack of leadership, and unprofessional management. Everyone is on edge and defensive so there is little to no teamwork because people don't trust one another. It's a shame because Boston Mutual used to be a great place to work with a legacy of longevity. However, the toxic environment is driving away many great employees. The current President and CEO, Paul Quaranto, is running the company into the ground as a result of inexperience, backstabbing, and excessive spending. If you aren't with him, you're against him, and he's all about fluff. The strong leaders are being cut out in favor of unqualified managers and executives who lack a backbone and/or morality. Unfortunately there is no where for employees to go for help or support because HR turns a blind eye to any and all wrongdoing.

Pros

Good co-workers, salary, bonus, benefits

Cons

Where to begin? Like many, I joined this company from a larger company hoping to bring my experience and expertise to truly make a difference in a smaller company. And like the others, I quickly learned that they don’t want new ideas, they simply want to do things the same way they’ve done them for the past 138 years. Nothing you do is ever good enough because it doesn’t match with their archaic way of doing things. You are forced to “dummy down” your expertise to do things EXACTLY the way they want you to (like the way it was done in 1970) and you literally get dumber by the minute working here. Everyone is micromanaged by leaders and there is zero autonomy. The best way I can describe working here is that it’s absolutely soul crushing. There are constant reorgs because there is not a long-term strategic plan. The same people at the top (who are already well compensated) get promoted over and over and get new opportunities, while the customer experience team is constantly told there is no money and they are not paid what they are worth. HR is doing a job/pay evaluation with an outside firm, and they use that excuse to whatever angle suits them best. Someone will be told they can’t get more money/a promotion until the job evaluation is done, and then the next day an announcement will come out about five people who just got promoted. There is no consistency! The head of my area micromanages EVERYTHING, makes constant last-minute requests so everyone has to drop everything to cater to him, and is never, ever satisfied. Everything has to be reworked 10 times to satisfy his slanted idea of perfectionism. People waste HOURS each week trying to satisfy him or figure out what EXACTLY he wants. There is so much fear and control in this company - everyone is so afraid of doing something wrong that no one will make a decision (and no one is empowered to make a decision anyway except for a few at the top). This promotes an environment of finger pointing and throwing people under the bus to save themselves. Trust is non-existent in this company at all levels. People are encouraged to change everything about themselves to match what the leaders want, which is very counterproductive to a diverse and inclusive environment where people should be encouraged to show up as their true, authentic selves. Morale is so bad that “listening” sessions were recently held where employees were encouraged to share feedback about how we could make the company better. Ironically, there was much more talking going on from the person leading the session than any actual listening. Now there are a bunch of check-the-box activities taking place that are supposed to make it a better place to work, when the reality is that until the senior leaders become more open-minded, trusting, approachable, kinder, accepting, less micro-managing and controlling, nothing will change. The positives of the company is that there are good benefits and good pay/bonuses (for salaried staff). Everyone I know is literally staying for the paycheck only and have entirely given up hope of ever actually being able to contribute in a positive, meaningful way. And that’s a shame because there are many smart, talented people who work here who are never given the opportunity to show their true talent. After this review you’re probably wondering why I still work there. The truth is, I believe in what this company does and who it serves. I’m hanging onto the hope that things internally will get better. This could truly be a great organization - our leaders have the power to make it happen if they could just work hard toward creating a better, more trusting and autonomous work environment.
