Cool building, miserable culture

Pros

-Working in one of the most reputable landmarks in the city is neat. -Books and no late fees -Health/retirement benefits are great (suppose this is applies to all city employees) -Scheduled raises per union contracts are nice

Cons

-Residency policy for city workers can make things difficult. Geographically Boston isn't that big and affordable places to live can be hard t come by -Archaic processes: a lot is still done manually on paper (what workplace this size still has paper timesheets?) -Employee development is non-existent and not a priority. -Has the lowest morale of any workplace I've ever seen. -Many managers are clearly unqualified for their roles. Competent managers are more focused on their legacy/image than on their teams and employees. -Union leadership is on a power trip and use this to protect bad employees from being held accountable. This does nothing to help the stereotype of "lazy public sector workers" -Working here generally killed my ability to enjoy the library as a city resident, so if you love the library don't work there.

Pros

Better pay than some other metro area libraries Some very awesome librarians doing hard work to serve their communities

Cons

Wealthy, out-of-touch administrators Systemic racism Most branches are treated as less important than the central library Fancy architecture doesn't mean accessible or free from major issues City Hall meddles
