Pros

I came from the startup world, and was hesitant leaving the shiny and fancy. My office was nice, my perks were cool, my vacation was unlimited, and everything was so laid back. I took the job at BVARI to get going on a new career path, but I was nervous leaving behind the laid back 15th floor downtown company for a rough-around the edges non-profit. To my wonder I'm very glad I did. The culture is very laid back, the people are great, the benefits are better, and the work is challenging. I get to come in and do what I want to do with flexibility and very defined room for growth; something my old job did not fulfill. BVARI even changed the job I interviewed for just for me. The people are all very nice, intelligent, passionate, and fun. So, in reality I left a startup where I wasn't growing or doing what I wanted, and lost the fancy digs and cool perks. But I stumbled into a role I wanted in a passionate non-profit with similar culture. So far it's been worth the loss of the fluff!

Cons

The biggest cons coming into BVARI are adding 30 minutes to my commute, the strict rules of the VA, the long list of unfamiliar jargon, and the current stirrings of chaos. BVARI has been experiencing growth, but many administrative roles have been filled by ever changing temps. Which means documents, processes, and protocols have been changed, lost, or even broken in the wake. It sucks coming into the aftermath having to pickup the pieces, but rewarding to know you are going to help make everything so much better once the dust clears. I occasionally ask myself if I should've asked for more money, but the potential to do great things eases my mind.
