Pros

Unlimited PTO is an actual thing Coworkers are nice and smart Free salad (sometimes)

Cons

The management at this company is the absolute worst. They've been so focused on expanding the farm and hiring a ton of people, but their management style is just terrible—way too corporate, especially for a startup. And let me tell you, the HR department is a nightmare. They never show up and refuse to negotiate anything, whether it's salary, benefits, or even the severance package. But that's not all. More than 70% of the employees are white males, so you can hardly get any promotion as other groups, and the company couldn't care less about its people. They treat their employees like crap. Just take a look at the old reviews—they actually expected employees with pregnant family members to show up at the office three days a week without any regard or adjustments during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022. Many people had to quit because the CEO basically said, "It's your problem, not ours." And guess what? This year, during the layoffs, they let go of pregnant coworkers and those who had only two months left to apply for an H1B visa. They don't give a damn about people. Oh, and get this—they wouldn't even provide COVID tests in the office when the new strain was spreading like crazy. The head of HR had the audacity to tell us to buy our own tests from nearby pharmacies. Can you believe it? Save yourself the trouble and stay away from this heartless company. All they care about are their precious crops. BTW, HRs created fake 5-star reviews.

Pros

Stated mission, PTO policy, pay depending on the role, mostly nice people who mean well and are trying to do the right thing, parental leave and misc. benefits

Cons

Ability to execute on mission. Growing a few light green lettuces is not solving climate change. If climate change and population growth accelerate food crisis it won’t be lettuce that people need. The water crisis in the West is caused by cattle feed, corn, wheat, et cetera not salad lettuces. This is not a serious proposition until it can actually produce more substantial crops. Despite the $$$ spent on marketing there is no established brand. Bowery doesn’t know what it is and consumers certainly don’t. Also bureaucracy, strategy, C-suite, asinine compensation philosophy. The day to day interactions can be maddening. Everything at Bowery is performative, it feels like a caricature of an early 2000s wannabe Silicon Valley startup, complete with cheesy motivational lines the C-suite uses with straight faces (e.g. “if Ford asked people what they wanted they would have said faster horses”). Ask pointed questions in your interviews. In mine they led me to believe the business was much healthier than it was and a lot closer to a few “breakthroughs.”

Pros

Amazing technology and driven team trying to make a difference. Fast moving and quick thinking.

Cons

Technology is presented as in house/custom, but almost all is off the rack from other companies. Authenticity is not a priority.
